One is I feel like I'm wasting my time, effort and writing skills writing this stuff. It's not that challenging to my imagination or skill as a writer to use other people's characters and universes. It's like doing Mad Libs. I can write fanfic like spilling water. It's just too easy, and even if the positive feedback from readers was a great ego booster, it was making me lazy as a writer.
A lot of people say this. And to certain extents, I agree. But to me there is something intimidating about original works - people expect too much of me so the fun of writing is lost. That's why I like fanfiction instead; it allows me to make mistakes, change, try new writing styles and practise. I use it like a learning board. If that makes sense.

Second is the whole fandom culture. It's a real turn-off. I had a lot trouble getting my Atlantis fanfic posted and read because of everyone being into "shipping" and other self-indulgent nonsense and not interested in stories that weren't gratituously over the top. It's like you had to have a cheap, crass gimmick to get someone to even look at your story. And don't even get me started with the DW fandom.
I totally agree that the fandom culture is much of a turn-off. That's why I shy away from mainstream fanfiction forums. I've had difficulties posting some of my things as well. In that sense I'm glad I don't care if anyone reads my stuff or not, because then I can happily venture down the fanfiction paths I want.
Anyway, I'm rambling. Thanks for replying, I really liked hearing your point of view.
