I watched Woody Allen's Matchpoint...It was a great movie....but...just several thoughts...
Although I can see that it was the director's intention to put an emphasis on the concept of 'luck in life,' the fact that Chris (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) didn't get caught seems a little unlikely...
And, I think if Chris was going to loose/destroy Nola (Scarlett Johansson) either way, it probably would have been better to just flatly make it clear that he didn't want to leave his wife and the lifestyle she provided him, rather than to kill Nola. And Nola could have gone her own way and have the baby if she wanted to. But I can see what led Chris to murder...because Nola was so set upon having him as a husband and his child, it must have seemed to Chris that there was no other way out...I can also see Nola's perspective...She was tired of being objectified sexually...From her point of view, the relationship she had with Chris seemed like a good match...she thought it should work....especially now that she was pregnant with Chris' child.
But I'm thinking...still they could have talked it over...although nothing could have saved Chris from being a bastard and Nola from being unwise, it would have been easier on both himself and Nola (if you can call being hurt and being left with the weight of reality+crap easier than being killed) if they could have reached a conclusion which didn't involve killing people. Nola would be greatly hurt, but she could at least have a chance in life...Although I can't make a judgment whether it is better to live and go through all the s**t in life...It's a very philosophical(?) question, and I would say that I would prefer to resort to God's opinion on it...But I presume that even if Nola was left to go her own way, she would have been able to find some good chances in life...Like all those survivors who were able to let the peacefulness and happiness blossom in their heart against all the odds...(like Jerry and Mary Newport!) And you know, the imperfection and problems of life never end anyway...

Oh well...it was a movie that left me with a heavy heart and some catharsis. Why do people often act like such imperfect, irresponsible craps?

And by the way, it seems that Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet is being released on DVD...I can't wait! :)

Thats an amazing movie! I felt the same way with the ending. It was an interesting concept though. Ya know the whole luck thing kinda creeps me out. I think Woody Allen is a great director, just kinda a creepy person thats all.

I watched Mozart and the Whale a few days ago...Usually, before I watch a movie I prefer to read the original work first...and usually I find it helpful...This time, the movie was 'inspired' by the original work and the characters and the situations they were in were quite different from the book...so, actually reading the book first hindered me from getting into the movie....
I could relate much to Isabelle...taking things literally and finding solace in art...etc
It was a lovely movie...but I could see that movies tend to make things look more beautiful and ideal than they really are...
I think it is better to separately appreciate the book and the movie, in this case...And as always, I find the original work or the book better than the movie...(the only exception to this was probably Harry Potter series...I liked the movies and the books equally...:))
I also think it would be interesting to make a movie based on the actual Mozart and the Whale....I think it would have been much more interesting than what we have in the current Mozart and the Whale movie...I think Jack Nicholson would make a great Jerry Newport...

Matchpoint was better than expected; i am a fan of Woody Allen but he can be a bit patchy, especially recently.
The film had nothing new to say on the themes of crime and punishment.
It was similar to half of the plot in his earlier masterpiece 'Crimes & Misdemeanors'.
The ways in which themes differed from this movie was interesting. It's a while since i saw either so i won't comment further on this matter. I am not too clear.
Scarlett Johannson was better than i thought; she tends to be cast in films as an excuse to show her knickers and pouting lips. But i cannot really fault her in MatchPoint.
One of Allen's best in recent years; enjoyable, some funny bits, i liked the ending.
