Hi,

It's very normal! In fact, times have become very abnormal because
people have stop singing!

People all over the world in the past sang all the time! They sang in the morning, at lunch time, then evenings were a party & people sang until they're drop off to sleep! Every accasions like wedding, birth, harvest,
etc.. were times for singing.

Unlike today, where we just watch & listen & leave the singing to professionals, everybody sang then.

I believe a human is built to sing & she/he becomes a little abnormal
if singing is left for others to do.

So, I suggest you should also sing along while you listen to your
walkman!

Peace,

sonda

Music helps me get through my day as well...if I'm not listening to music, I have a song going through my head. I also love to sing, but I have an absolutely awful singing voice so I only sing when I'm completely alone!!

Music helps me work better, at least when doing mundane tasks... pretty much most of the work that is needed during the day for me. I also will listen to music for no reason at all, just sit down lay in bed with headphones and close my eyes and just listen and concentrate on the music... see if I notice any new subtleties to the songs I haven't noticed before.

As for listening while working, I have an idea on why it helps me. If I am doing something simple my mind wanders often. Thinking about this and that, constantly exploring new ideas that pop into my head... this is very distracting while working. But when I listen to music my mind is focusing on listening and understanding the music, so my active mind is being occupied so I can do the task with no problems.

The Tempo of the song also regulates who I work, I typically don't like slow music so this helps me work faster then I usually do. I've noticed that I will even spray cleaner or scrub to the rhythm of the music.

I rarely use music to help me get through the day emotionally though.

I use music in lots of ways. If I'm needing energy it can pump me up. If I'm too hyper it can calm me down.

The best thing about music is my stim dancing. :)
Mate ...does that make me feel good!! Funny thing is people have told me I'm a good dancer. Hahahaha

Both those are true for me, I also use it a lot to alter the angles my mood if I feel the need or desire.

It is common for autistic children to listen to ipods, etc. when they are out in public. By listening to music they are able to make transitions from one environment to the next, more smoothly, for instance from the street to the inside of an office building.

I think it's totally true. I listen to music all the time, especially when I'm driving, doing chores/work, or online.

Wow. There sure are a lot of autistic people around! Everywhere I go I see people listening to music. ;-)

Another huge appeal of wearing an MP3 player is that it drowns out the random noises and shields you from non-essential human contact. I wear mine whenever I go on mass transit. Although loud noises can really set me off, I don't mind loud music because it's predictable. Since the loud music drowns out the loud noises, nothing gets through and I get to groove in my own little world.

Some people are concerned that kids are spending too much time with their iPod and X-Box and are losing communication skills. At this rate, in another generation or two perhaps AS will be an acquired syndrome....

i live for music. i listen to it all the time. it apparently creates endorphina or something to make you happier. it helps release stress it's awesome.

i've also started creating my own music, i play guitar and sing :) i also perform in musicals as well! it's really fun, it's a good outlet for everyone.

also, craig nicholls from the vines is an aspie. he's a crazy party boy but he's still hot and it's awesome for him and other musicians!

I find (some) music beneficial to me as well, at least in my own subjective opinion. When attempting to do serious work in the midst of audio chaos, it does drown everything out as Jetson-san says. Also, tunes selected by my own consciousness can cover up the annoying racket that plays in my head after hearing a particularly irritating song during a casual visit to a restaurant or a necessary stroll past my sister's computer.
