I have been playing the uke for about 3 years and am totally nuts about it.
Anyone else like the ukulele?

I play alot of old standards..that's my favorite..
But I also write originals.
From July to December of last year I played uke on the street in New Orleans (street busked)
I also play kazoo..the two go well together.
I am working on a solo act... www.myspace.com/poopylungstuffing
but I also sometimes play the uke in my band "Organ Failure"

It is very fun and easy. Once you have a ukulele all the resources you need to learn to play it can be found online.
It is a complex and versatile enough instrument for any serious musician (George Harrison was a big fan of the ukulele)
But is nonthreatening enough that child can learn to play it without much difficulty.

I have one that I mess around with, but it's a really cheap one, so it sounds like crap. I was thinking of changing the strings as a cheap way to improve the sound. Are the Martin uke strings any good?

Yeah...I think martin strings are ok..I have a set but have not yet had a chance to use them.
the thing though is the older the strings on your uke the better...it takes a while for them to really set in and sound good/stay in tune.
A uke might start out sounding crappy at first but over time the sound will improve as the strings set in. My very best uke is one on which I have never ever changed the strings..they are different from guitars in that aspect.

I once sta in on the uke with a bluegrass band called Dead Religion that did all dead Kennedys and Bad Religion songs.
That was really fun.
