Watching a documentary called Bukowski: Born Into This even as I write this, which is a documentary on the late, great author and poet Charles Bukowski, I thought I'd ask, does anyone else have a favorite documentary film on an author or anyone else in the arts?
Some others that have peaked my interest have been, H.P. Lovecraft: Fear Of The Unknown, as well as William Burroughs: A Man Within.

American Splendor is a biographical film about the comic book writer Harvey Pekar.

Harvey was a frustrated person just working a job a file clerk and felt like he had a creative spark he just couldn't get going. Eventually he tried just jotting down random bits of his life in Cleveland, OH in comic book format, but with very crude stick figures as he really had no drawing skill.

By a weird fluke, Harvey was also a fan of collecting jazz records and through this hobby became friends with the previously mentioned Robert Crumb who kind of on a whim drew some of Pekar's crude comic panels. Slowly from this point a self biographical comic book AMERICAN SPLENDOR emerged with different guest illustrators drawing Pekar's life.

In the movie, Harvey plays himself in current interviews, but in flash back scenes his life is re-enacted by Paul Giamatti.

I've been seeing a new movie on Amazon called David Lynch: The Art Life. I haven't seen it yet but I'm very curious about it. I'll probably check it out at some point.

There's also another documentary called David Lynch: Pretty As A Picture.

I saw the Bukowski documentary once - watched it in a class at school, actually. I forget when exactly. Either way, from what little I recall of it, it was rather intriguing.

I'm not so much into documentaries about authors, though. I'm more interested in documentaries related to music and sexuality.
