Music Video Singularity?!
It's ridiculous enough that pop songs are sounding more and more similar these days, but do the music videos for these songs have to follow suit? It seems that most directors want to make these videos cinematic (the fact that the medium of modern mainstream films seems to be oversimplified as if it were a genre could be an issue in its own right, but that's a debate for another time) and over-sexualized and unrelated to the supposed stories and themes of these songs. I'll admit that I like watching these videos from time to time, but you can always have too much of a good thing; familiarity breeds contempt. The only good thing that I can imagine coming from all of this is that it makes for better music video mash-ups.
Am I just overreacting to a natural and possibly temporary change - a change that might be even older than it seems - within a relatively unimportant part of US pop culture? I mean, aren't the actual songs more important than the videos?
This is as old as the music video itself. All about copying the successful to get in on their money too. People don't want originality, people don't want something thought provoking or challenging. They want the same s**t reworked (barely) and spit back out at them. Mainstream movies are basically the same.
Take a look at the modern variations like the automobile industry. At one time, each year's new models were basically nothing more than "Look, we made the rear fender fin 2 inches sleeker..." No improvements. If the model sold well, the next year was the same with only the most basic changes that could not offend.
The software industry is in that same place now. Companies like Adobe and Autodesk can't make a compelling product anymore. Each year the menus get moved around (Look, we moved a few things!! We ARE working for you!! Please buy our new, but not really enhanced product!! WE don't care that we haven't made any real changes in nearly 10 years.....But we can't think of new things anymore, so we'll just make you pay for a subscription instead."
Industries of any type get old and stale, sometimes shackled by "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." But, many times they do not know it's broke or don't care as they laugh all the way to the bank. When concerns other than quality and innovation are subservient to shareholder's, then things go downhill.
Everybody wants the old. Consumers, producers of products, etc until the next 'new' thing comes along to shake it up a bit and then it'll start the cycle anew.

Which sort of supplements the point I was trying to make but was kind of unclear. The artistic spirit of music is diminished greatly. While it is a lucrative industry, thus needing a business perspective to succeed in, it shouldn't be viewed as simply a money making endeavor or it isn't very respectable.
And "everyone" does not want the old. The sheeple do. Some people seek the unique. Whether it's in entertainment or anywhere else. I know I do because repetition annoys the piss out of me in general.

I was absolutely supplementing, bolstering and expanding on your point of view. It is that way. I never had a smart phone until my wife bought one and made me use it. It's got a few features that are nice, but just as happy with my flip phone.
My students used to laugh at me because of the flip phone. These were the same students, that although using a computer their entire life, couldn't find the 'drop down menu' during instruction in class.
Soooooo, yeah....the sheeple are in putting the wrong people in charge.
I read an article about three years ago whre one of the founders of the internet said that basically it's just all databasing to the point of directing searches instead of letting people 'discover' things. Things like facebook feeds and things like that. I've noticed that if I did a search on grills (Like I did a year and a half ago) that suddenly I was peppered with ads in all my searches, paid search ads at the top also featured grills and even got emails about grills!!
