This is me in my costume at the art car parade.
I rode in a swing suspended over the truck bed, played ukulele and sang through a megaphone that was duct taped to my shoulder

fun fun!!

I do not know what I would have done without those pink sunglasses.
I got photographed hundreds of times

yep, in Houston.

this is like the 20th or 21st anneversary.

We ended up winning 2nd place for alternative fueled vehicle...we were using a bio diesel flat bed truck.

I thought we were gonna win the award for the loudest art car...we were very loud.

Cool. That's great that you won something. I lived mostly in the Montrose area (I went to UST), so I'm quite familiar with the art car parade. Never that crazy about the actual parade. I'm not big on crowds or loud stuff myself, but I like the cars.

I live in the northern heights, but I spent a few years in the montrose (was kinda born there...lived on west main as an infant befoe moving to the heights)..then moved back there in my late teens and early 20's...
I have only been to see the art car parade maybe 4 times...have ridden in it now twice.
the crowds bug me too..I feel pretty insulated from them when I am actually in the parade though :)

I have a couple of friends who live in the Heights, both on Bayland. They're not close friends, I just known them through my closest pal, who lives in "Montrose Proper" (what we like to call the 77006 zip code). Both of my closest friends live in Montrose, right next to UST, as they both are attached to the university in various ways.

I was never directly invloved witht eh art car parade, I had just brushed elbows with a few who had. I never really was able to intergrate myself with the art and music scene there, so I was always an outsider.

I would love to move back to Houston but I can't afford to right now. I'm planning on moving to Austin this summer (I'm currently in El Paso - kill me), which is a little cheaper.

I am also in the Houston area. I currently live in Deer Park, near Pasadena and Baytown.

Houston has gotten more liberal now that all the WASPs have migrated to Montgomery County.

I have seen a lot of the art cars before, but have never been to an actual parade.

I miss the art cows, though.

Tim

I have sorta grown up in the art and music scene. My dad's brother was in a local band in the 70's and years later when i joined a band, i ended up running into lots of folks who knew my uncle and my parents...and I work with alot of them in various ways over the years...like with Motrose Radio..in the late 90's...and I ended up working with alot of bands because one of my obsessions for a while had to do with these elaborate theme concerts I was always setting up.

This does not make me a "local artysy hipster" or anything like that mind you..even though I help run an "alternative" venue and whatnot...I tend to get recognised alot at public artsy events..this tends to give me more anxiety than anything else really....

Yeah, I knew that. I've tried to talk to you about that before, but you blew me off.

You say that like it's a bad thing. All I can say it "Praise Jesus!" and all my liberal Houston friends will sing "Hallelujah" in refrain. Now if only the Evanglicals would go too...

Really, seriously, Houston's still far from being an ultra-liberal place. I mean, the city wants to call Montrose the Museum District nowdays because "Montrose" is too strongly associated with the gay and weird artsy community that's been living there since the 70's, despite the fact that most of that community has be displaced by all the yuppies and townhouses that dwell there now. They more or less killed off the Westheimer Art Festival and they tried to do the same with the Gay Pride Parade, despite these being culture hallmarks of the city. Houston's embarrassed by its own culture (like a typical WASP or Evangical). The city government is still hugely unfair to minorities and unjustly favors big business and big building contractors, it lacks appropriate social services for a city its size, and all its public systems, from public transportation to the school system are a mess due to the city being focused on business and making money for decades. And despite the damage Enron and Bush's buddy Ken Lay did to that town, downtown and city hall are still just crawling with Bush minions.

I apologize if I came across as negative. But I do agree with you about Houston being embarrassed about its own culture. Buildings, especially downtown, that have significant historical value, have been torn down to make way for parking lots.

I agree that we're not ultra-liberal, but I hope Houston will no longer be stereotyped as being just a big business town. While there will always be WASPs, Evangelicals, and big business people here, I would like to see those stereotypes eventually disappear.

I admit that I have lived a rather sheltered life, and I don't know as much about Houston culture as I would like to.
