J. S. Bach. I really like Baroque music, especially fugues.

I second this. Even though I don't listen to a lot of classical, I do enjoy Bach's works.

But favorite classical piece- Smetana and "The Moldau"

Tchaikovsky-especially The Nutcracker

To listen to- I don't really have an all-time favourite. I'll listen obsessively to 3-4 different composers for months on end, then get interested in someone else. At the moment: Malipiero, Finzi and Bax- I love half-forgotten music from about 1850-1950. I have a heavy Naxos Records habit, as it's a cheap way to try out unknown composers.

To play- has to be Chopin, though he's mostly way too hard for my piano skills!

Mendelssohn (particularly Hebrides Overture and Piano Sextet)

Vivaldi.

For some reason it always seems to upset people when I say this. The response is always something along the lines of why would my favorite be Vivaldi when he was a contemporary of so many prolific greats, namely Bach (incidentally, I'm also a big fan of JS Bach). It's like they suspect I do it out of lack of knowledge, which I think is ironic - no one who gets upset about this seems to know Vivaldi did anything other than the Four Seasons. I've dug pretty extensively through Bach's work, as well as that of other Baroque composers like Corelli and Gabrieli. Simply put, Vivaldi's stuff resonates with me the very most, though I am a fan of those others.

I'm with you there- there was so much good stuff written around that time, it makes no sense to ignore everything but Bach! Plus, J.S. Bach's style was a unique mix of innovation and borrowing, which you start to pick up on once you know other Baroque composers.
