Does it matter to you if you can understand lyrics?

So a lot of music I listen to is not in english, but english is the only language I know...it really doesn't bother me, and I like the sound of lyrics in other languages it sounds good even though I don't know what it all means. Does anyone care if you can understand the lyrics or can you enjoy music without understanding them?

But yeah I listen to a lot of Scandinavian metal, particularly folk metal since there seem to be a lot of bands of that genre from there but not so much in other regions, and its one of my favorite kinds of metal because I like the incorporation of old instruments that aren't really typical in rock music.

i never listen music in my lenguage and i think english has something special with music so i try to understand lyrics or i go on the Net to find them. i think lot's of american and bitish music have great lyrics ("Wooden ship" by Jefferson airplane or "Money" by Pink floyd ) and, even if in my opinion it is not strictly essential, i think they are important

It doesn't matter at all to me if I can't understand a song's lyrics; I like a lot of German and Swedish bands but it never bothers me if their songs are in the member's native languages. Sometimes, (god forbid should anyone hear me!) I'll even sing along, probably mangle the actual pronunciation a bit, though. For me it's all about acoustic skill, and the quality of the singing.

No, I actually think the music is the most important part of a song. Nowadays I mostly listen to music in english, but it's not my native language. I grew up not understanding anything of the songs playing on the radio, since we first began learning english at my school when we were like 10.

It matters for me. Part of what I like about music is the sound, the other part is the poetry. Plus it's easier to form a strong attachment when the words really resonate- when they have some personal meaning and I can relate. I've actually been disappointed by misheard lyrics before. It ruined the songs for me, because a part of what make that song special had been erased.

I don't like songs in foreign languages unless I have access to an accurate translation or know the language well enough to translate the words myself and the culture well enough to translate their meaning.

Some songs have some good lyrics with a deeper meaning, but typically, i listen to the vocals as just another instrument.

My favorite Jpop Idol group, Starmarie have lyrics that mostly hard to find or can only be found in the physical CD's they sell.

For me and my fellow Marists (Starmarie Fans), we are mostly in the fandom for the very upbeat dancing and very kind and interactive girls.

But they are a really talented girl group who I give the privilege of me calling them friends (plus their Producer too)


Fun Fact: They may look Bubble Gummy in the outside but their songs are often the exact opposite.

I definitely prefer songs I understand the lyrics of, but occasionally there are songs with tunes I like so much that I don't care about the language.

To some, I suppose ... like the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation ( https://vault.fbi.gov/louie-louie-the-song ) which agreed to investigate the May 1963 recording of "Louie, Louie" by The Kingsmen from February to May 1964, but found no evidence of alleged obscenity. The song's lyrics were so "nearly unintelligible" ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louie_Louie#The_Kingsmen ), that many listeners convinced themselves that some hidden words or phrases must have been included.

^ Yeah I like it when bands do that. Even still some bands don't give the lyrics out or anything to keep it a guessing game and generally interesting which is okay sometimes.

I've recently been getting back into folk metal so if you have any recommendations shoot! Been on a bit of a Korpiklaani binge.

Taake have some cool s**t, I love runes. Need to get me a Taake shirt as I've been meaning to for a while, them and Enslaved. Been thinking of a runic tattoo which blends into a blackout arm tattoo but translating it seems a bit complex. I think fan tattoo's are a nice idea, perhaps like a few lyrics from a song in runes since they're just really aesthetically pleasing to look at.
