They don't look like humans at all. The proportions are all wrong.

A lot of anime doesn't have the big eyes. I've seen quite a few animes where the people look completely normal.

I'm not sure. The only animated characters I think can be attractive are the shockingly realistic-looking ones from cutting edge CGI, or something, and even then usually not because so many of them seem to be hyperactive, manic-depressive, or psychotic. Also there aren't any super-relistic-looking CGI gothic anime girls that I know of, and usually in order for me to really be attracted from a purely visual standpoint they have to be at least a little bit on the gothic side. (Again, this is just from a purely visual standpoint.)

I do think, however, that Lust from Fullmetal Alchemist would look extremely hot if she was real flesh and bones instead of simple 2D animation.
