The day must have a ‘y’ in it, because I’m obsessing about music again….

What are your favourite songs or pieces of music, and why?

At the risk of sending everyone into a coma I will share some of mine with you. Stuff which has a strong sensory or emotional impact usually resonates with me for good or bad. A few of my favourites are…

‘She’s Lost Control’ – Joy Division: despite or perhaps because of the sparse, minimalist arrangement it creates a rising tension, barely restrained by Ian Curtis’s increasingly agitated delivery.

‘How Soon Is Now’ – The Smiths: the wailing guitars, pulsing rhythmic flow and keening vocals combine to create a genuinely affecting anthem, and a total sensory treat for me – in contrast to the excellent dark humour in much of Morrissey’s lyrics elsewhere in The Smiths and his solo discography.

‘Soon’ – My Bloody Valentine: as with everything on their ‘Loveless’ album, this has layers of vocal and musical fragments, a driving rhythm and is an all round sonic brainbath – I promise to stop mentioning this album if someone acknowledges how good it is….

That will have to do, while some of you are still conscious…. :nerdy:

No need to explain

I left that one off before I bored everyone to tears - Men-An Tol by The Levellers is a cracking song, glad you liked it.... just restraining myself from drivelling on about 'celtic tingle'

AW, NO!! That has got to be the worst song ever created since the dawn of time! Let me clue you in on something... Not everyone here is a Volunteer fan. My family has been loyal to the Gators of Florida since we left. I know we live in Tennessee, but we are Gators, through and through!
This explains the hostility that i have been under since i was three. So, unless you want me to come over there with my powers and put a world of hurt on your backside, don't dare mention that song no more, ya hear?

Rocky Top, Rocky Top, Rocky Top, look closely at my avatar, does that look like a UT emblem? No, its Western Carolina Universty, and Western's fight song is Swing March, but Rocky top is still my favorite song. Even thought Wester Carolina is my favorite colloge, but I DO prefer Tenn. over Fla, any day of the week.

PS ROCKY TOP!! !! !! !! !

celtic tingle...

drool....

i want to reply properly to this, but, unfortunately, i beat dunc hands down when it comes to obsessing about music, and i don't want to send everyone into a coma with a four page long post, with detailed raptures about the wonderful use of the finger cymbals in bar 43...

btw, mel, the way jim morrison's voice cracks just slightly on the line "tell me where your freedom lies" in "crystal ships" is awe-inspiring...

(see what i mean?)

Famous Blue Raincoat! I'm a sucker for my parent's old records, I love Cohen, Dylan, etc. etc.
My favourite song at the moment is 'Life in a Glass House" by Radiohead

Some past (???) music obsessions:

Holst - The Planets
Adrian Snell - Solo
Tolkien/Swann - The Road Goes Ever On
Donna Williams - Nobody Nowhere
John Williams - 40 Years Of Film Music

Things planned for getting obsessed with in the future:

Hildegard von Bingen
Thomas Tallis
Sibelius

Can't think of more right now

I like some of the music tracks from Shrek 2. My all time favorite is "I Need a Hero", although "Livin La Viva Loca" is a close second.

Highway 61 Revisited. Predictable, I know, but I just  it.

Any cartoon soundtrack that introduces Nick Cave and Tom Waits to innocent little children is ok by me... :skull:

What's he building in there?
What the hell is he building
In there?
He has subscriptions to those
Magazines... He never
Waves when he goes by
He's hiding something from
The rest of us... He's all
To himself... I think I know
Why... He took down the
Tire swing from the Peppertree
He has no children of his
Own you see... He has no dog
And he has no friends and
His lawn is dying... and
What about all those packages
He sends. What's he building in there?
With that hook light
On the stairs. What's he building
In there... I'll tell you one thing
He's not building a playhouse for
The children what's he building
In there?

Now what's that sound from under the door?
He's pounding nails into a
Hardwood floor... and I
Swear to god I heard someone
Moaning low... and I keep
Seeing the blue light of a
T.V. show...
He has a router
And a table saw... and you
Won't believe what Mr. Sticha saw
There's poison underneath the sink
Of course... But there's also
Enough formaldehyde to choke
A horse... What's he building
In there. What the hell is he
Building in there? I heard he
Has an ex-wife in some place
Called Mayors Income, Tennessee
And he used to have a
consulting business in Indonesia...
but what is he building in there?
What the hell is building in there?

He has no friends
But he gets a lot of mail
I'll bet he spent a little
Time in jail...
I heard he was up on the
Roof last night
Signaling with a flashlight
And what's that tune he's
Always whistling...
What's he building in there?
What's he building in there?

We have a right to know.

:D i wish all tom waits songs were as good as that one

Well I've been thinking hard about this ever since Dunc posted this thread and I'm finding it really hard to limit my choices to just a couple. Different pieces of music affect me in different ways depending on the mood I am in.
I'll probably add to this as I think of more that I just couldn't leave off

Been down so long- The doors- like a lot of LA Woman this song has a very bluesy feel to it.

The end- The doors-I love this song! Sometimes it makes me feel really positive and other times it makes me cry. I was going to post some of my favourite lyrics from this song but I just can't pick a small enough portion.

5000 ways to die- Nerf Herder- a song about the pointlessness of suicide.

The severed Garden (AKA A feast of friends)- one of Jim Morrison's poems set to music. Always makes me cry.

Oh and a Bikini Kill song that I can't name here

Mel
