Wow. We never had anything like that at school. What stuff is yours and what's by the other people?

I tried teaching myself some rendering about a month ago, but I haven't put much into it and so far the extent of my abilities is this:

Can the animation be downloaded anywhere? Also, what's up with the robot being made in the machine shop?

Machine shop? Robot?

Not sure what you mean by this.

What program do you use for drafting and rendering?

All of it (that is, all the links up to my biography) is mine.

Art of Illusion, since it was OSS and hence free.

oooohhh. . .thats what the rest of the robotics team does. They build a robot that plays a game against other schools.

This website explains it better than I can

Is there a story behind the animation?

Quick sketch I did today:

the animation starts with a mothership blocking out the sun. A small landing ship (green) is seen coming out of the bay.

this picture shows the back end of this.

Image

next, the lander skims the surface of mars, and finally straigtens out and lands on the "feet" of the lander.

One of the test renders shows the surface of the planet.

Image

This picture did not actually come from the animaiton but shows what it would have looked like (expect with a red sky)

Image

After landing, the robot piloting the ship gets out, and starts looking for life. The robot carries a FIRST trophy. I'll post more images later.

How long did it take to make the various models, texture them, animate them etc?

It took me about 4 to 5 weeks (some animation was finished when I finished some models, I didn't need all the models at once)

Texturization and animation prep (Creating heirarchy for joints, animating the actual models and camereas, etc) took me about 2 weeks. I had roughly a little over a week left for rendering and I hoped to finish it in 2 days. Big mistake. It took me the entire computer lab and the whole week and I finished it on a sunday night, and the sound guys put their sound on it. That was very exciting but stressful.

How did you do with the award?

I didn't win it. Other teams had teams of people working on their animations and I could simply not compete in that way.

I needed to win at the regional level, and I didn't. Other teams had better animations that accomplished the intent of the award better.

One of my obessions in HS was asteroid mining. This is a large "container" ship that I made that is supposed to transport precious metals mined off of an asteroid to earth. I decided on making it like a "corn on the cob" storage device with kernals being gigantic containers (cast from excess asteroid material) for the pericous metals.

Image

This is a representation of how smaller ships will "harvest" the kernels for processing near earth. Near earth the kernels are removed and two, maybe three of them will be attached to a nuclear reactor and spun (and melted) to seperate the dross and purified metals.
Image

This shows one of the harvesters in its own storage bay on the space station.
Image

This is a frontal shot of an Anti-Piracy fighter. This was made as one of the more fantasical elements in my obession.

Image

I got a bit carried away with the security aspect. Here are some frigate shots. I designed the rocket back end after the Soyuz.

Aside from space mining, I am posting more stuff related to the animation.

The mars Lander

Oooooo! Complex models. Have you ever looked at http://www.orionsarm.com? The people there would likely appreciate someone with an interest in rendering spaceships.
