I spend a lot of time these days listening to music to the point where I feel a creative itch to do something of my own. I'm too lazy to learn an instrument but I like the idea of playing General in a virtual production studio and experimenting with drum beats/bass lines/guitar riffs/piano melodies, adding other instruments/vocal harmonies and just seeing where it takes me.

Are there any programs out there that would allow one to create music without physically playing or singing anything? Ideally, I would like it to be open source but I would be prepared to pay money for the right program.

This multitrack recording software used to be called Sonar, now the company is giving it away for free.

Audacity is a free open source digital audio editor and recording software.

As far as drum beats, bass and guitar lines and vocal melodies are concerned, you're talking about "libraries." These can cost you a pretty penny depending on which ones you get. Luckily, some are free.

Interestingly, most of the top music software companies will let you download their flagship programs and test them for free for 30 days.
