I want to do remix fan albums of classic game music but I don't know where to begin

What is the best DAW (digital audio workstation) software to use?

And places online with transcribed VGM?

Also how do I go about getting permission from the developers?

This is another one of my major life goals besides marriage!

Thanks in advance!

REAPER is a good shareware DAW, it becomes nagware after the trial expires but no features are lost.

Ardour and Cakewalk are other free options.

vgmusic.com has midis of VGM.

Unless you're releasing music commercially you don't need permission, there's already dozens of YouTube channels that do what you'd like to without interference from the publisher, writers, etc.

If you're interested in commercially releasing music you might wish to speak to an attorney for advice on the concerns you'll need to navigate.

Cool thanks for the info!

Before I can start remixing game music I first need to decide what songs I want to remix and how far back in gaming history I am willing to go!

Do you guys have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

I second Command & Conquer, I loved that soundtrack. Weirdly I have no memory of the Quake 2 soundtrack despite having played the game a lot.

Can I humbly suggest the Interstate '76 soundtrack. Back in the 90s it was very rare to hear a video game make use of any genre of music other than metal/rock and dance. Dirty 70s funk was a breath of fresh air for me.

I was thinking 80's and early 90's classic Japanese and European games so no Command & Conquer

Plus it might be hard to get permission from Frank Klepacki to remix his songs

Sorry for double-posting but I found how to get permission from the game developers so the next step would be to figure out how to transpose the songs I want to remix

Unfortunately most game companies don't have official sheet music books which is a shame

How to proceed?

Figure it out by ear, or maybe look for guitar tabs.

You might have to learn, unless you can find someone else who can do it for you.

There are also services out there that can transcribe music

I also want to create an online game music radio station

Have you had any luck with using them to transcribe?

That sounds like another good project to grapple.

Haven't tried yet, been busy with other things

Yeah and it shouldn't be too hard to do

Just need to find a website to host it and get permission from the game companies!

One thing I'd recommend is to not spread yourself too thin. If you'd like to get songs done, worry about getting a song done before you let other projects take over your attention. Otherwise you'll end up 5% done with twenty different projects instead of 100% done with one.

The radio station is the easiest to start with because it doesn't require transposing so I should start with that first
