This thread is for music written by and/or for girls and women. Songs can be about empowerment, feminism, trailblazers, or anything else (loosely) related to women/women’s issues. I’d prefer this to be a positive and supportive place, so no negative commentary or snark please. All genders are free to post here.

I’ll go first:

I loved this song when I was a teenager. My brother often got to do things that I wasn’t allowed to do because I was a girl. My parents didn’t actually teach me about safety. They just sheltered me further which wasn’t helpful overall.

Does this one count? :D I love this TV show and I first watched it on Lifetime many years ago.

Also some of Karliene's music seems pro-feminist. I like these songs she did for Anne Bonny the pirate queen as well as Queen Elizabeth I who refused to take a husband in order to hold onto power.

I am my mother's savage daughter
The one who runs barefoot
Cursing sharp stones
I am my mother's savage daughter
I will not cut my hair
I will not lower my voice

My mother's child is a savage
She looks for her omens in the colors of stones
In the faces of cats, in the falling of feathers
In the dancing of fire
In the curve of old bones

My mother's child dancеs in darkness
She sings heathеn songs
By the light of the moon
And watches the stars and renames the planets
And dreams she can reach them
With a song and a broom

We are all brought forth out of darkness
Into this world, through blood and through pain
And deep in our bones, the old songs are waking
So sing them with voices of thunder and rain

We are our mother's savage daughters
The ones who run barefoot
Cursing sharp stones
We are our mother's savage daughters
We will not cut our hair
We will not lower our voice

Me too! :D It's really the only show left on TV that makes me smile and not feel down about life after I watch it. And I love all four of these ladies they were each great in their own way.

Dorothy reminds me of my own mom. They're both so similar lol 8)

Also here's more songs by Karliene. She did one for Boudica, and while I think Boudica shouldnt be celebrated for the horrific things she did to those poor Roman civilians, I guess when it comes down to it she proved that a woman could be both a great warrior and a great leader even in ancient times when 99% of women were not respected, and she was really rebelling against her Roman oppressors who were as patriarchal as you get.

So anyways the song itself is really cool and feels empowering. 8)

Here's one she did for the character Galadriel in The Lord of the Rings. Galadriel is my top favorite LotR character, I really liked Eowyn too but Galadriel's strength shines in her great wisdom and modesty. The scene where Frodo offered her the ring of power and she avoided the temptation was just a really amazing part of the story. :)

Here's one she did of Marilyn Monroe. A lot of people really admired this old Hollywood Actress because as they said "In a world of fake people, she was as real as they come".

She also did one for the character Jessica Rabbit in Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

I like Jessica too because she really flipped the femme fatale archetype on its head. As she said in her famous quote "I'm not bad, I'm just drawn that way."

Also one she did I love about the Japanese Geisha.

As an admirer of Japanese culture I think that the Geisha are actually feminist in a way. Though unfortunetly they are deeply misunderstood in the West thanks to books like Memoirs of a Geisha and American GI's during WWII, the Geisha were NOT harlots but were highly respected women who trained in many forms of art like singing and dancing and were very well educated. Their job actually had nothing to do with sex and they are very choosey about the clients they serve.

The really interesting thing about geisha is that originally this was a profession for men only, as women in Japan were not allowed to be anything in ancient times. But over time it became a profession dominated by Japanese women and the geisha were some of the earliest examples of women having a career where they could keep their own wage. They were literally like the original career girls. I think that's very admirable. 8)

Can the song be for one woman?

This one's for all the mothers.

^ Yes! It’s a great song.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJp8W7FQ6FQ

I'll show you I am capable of causing such pain
With my delicate and fragile lady brain

I will not let you get away
I'd rather burn at the stake

But know I'll return and I'll be dead awake
I'll be dead awake, rising from the stake

I was constantly told in church that women were the “weaker vessel,” so I really appreciate the bolded lyric, not that I’m planning on following through or anything.

I know I've posted this song like a million times here already. (I'm obsessed with it  )

But does this song count? I've never played this video game but this red haired lady warrior with the golden prosthetic arm looks so badass. I get strong Boudica vibes off her character. Especially seeing the statues where she appears to be clinging to her daughters.

For the other half of the sky -

Woman
I can hardly express
My mixed emotions at my thoughtlessness
After all, I'm forever in your debt
And woman
I will try to express
My inner feelings and thankfulness
For showing me the meaning of success

Woman
I know you understand
The little child inside of the man
Please remember, my life is in your hands
And woman
Hold me close to your heart
However distant, don't keep us apart
After all, it is written in the stars

Woman
Please let me explain
I never meant to cause you sorrow or pain
So let me tell you again and again and again
I love you
Now and forever

Woman
John Lennon

I used to love rollerskating to this song.
The album Double Fantasy was released just three weeks before he was assassinated. :(

“You Don’t Own Me”

My ex used to say that he owned me, so I feel this song deeper than it was intended.
