Anyone here currently reading and / or writing fanfiction? (There's an older thread, but necroing seems to be frowned upon here.)

I'm a bit obsessed with Homestuck at the moment, so I'm reading one multi-chapter fic and have actually started my own. It's only about 5,000 words in, but that's the furthest I've ever got.

You were pretty busy! I'm here, though there's not much on it yet: https://www.fanfiction.net/u/9829856/Ba ... h-Wrangler
Just one possibly-abandoned Whofic and the start of what I'm writing now.

I post my fanfics on there since 2009 :) That's why I have managed to post so many fanfics :D . But there are people on there who have posted so much, much more fics, even like about 1500. P.S. I just added you to my favorites.

^Cheers! I've done the same.

I was planning to post another short chapter later this week. Had a burst of enthusiasm and wrote 4 chapters instead, but I think I'll stretch posting them out over the next month as I'll inevitably get distracted by something else soon.

ALL the words of the story start with one and the same letter - the "p" one :)

I used to be a talented at making comics as a kid. If I could team up with AI I might still make it work, but comics don't seem like a very lucrative business in this day and age.

That seems to be the case in almost all art forms these days. Anything can find an audience, but hardly anything can make a profit.

Not since discovering that most fanfics are thinly-disguised "Mary Sue" (or "Larry Stu") stories.

I could be wrong, however.  It has been a long time since I read one.

And what fics do you all like most? I mean, what genres? And what pairings? Now I'm writing a Man in Black/Claire Littleton "Lost" story - yes, it does sound unusual but my story is going to be interesting and mature and I truly hope that when it's already posted by me, you will be fond of it :)

I only need to find a beta who is a native speaker of English unlike myself.

My favourite fanfic is 'The Addams family move to Gotham City'. It's a compilation of videos acted out by one guy. He does an excellent job at distinguishing the characters considering he's the only actor. There's a compilation of all the parts on YouTube. I would describe it as a dark slice of life comedy that's pretty absurd but highly entertaining.

---

I wrote a fanfic once and posted it to Ao3 (Archive of our own). However, it's fairly niche. One specific chapter of one specific book really used to bug me. The character experiences something very similar to what I experienced and I related to him a lot but the way the topic itself is initially handled is a little awkward in my opinion. It's definitely well intentioned but damn did that chapter emotionally smack me in the face. I actually had to put the book down for a moment.

Rewriting the chapter was pretty fun and actually therapeutic in a way. It has a small audience but I can see that people have liked and bookmarked it so I'm happy enough that they're happy.

The rewrite of that specific chapter was not a new idea, in fact a podcast I listen to suggested to its audience that we should go write our own versions (it's a controversial scene in general amongst fans) but all the versions I found from other people weren't what I had in mind. So I wrote my own. Although I did like the jokey fanfic comic someone drew of that scene, which during when the antagonist is monologuing, he gets punched in the face part way through abruptly ending his speech. 10 / 10. No notes.

^Classic fix-it fic!

Outside of my current Homestuck obsession, I've also read Tolkein, Doctor Who and Brandon Sanderson fanfiction. I've tried to write for the first two of those, but never got very far. I've now written more of my Homestuck fic than I ever managed of my ill-fated dissertation....
