It was a lifelong dream for me. I've been telling stories since I was wee little; it's something I'm quite gifted at. All early ones centered around Charlie Brown and his friends, as they were sort of my friends, too.

I know some aren't as gifted in writing, but what about music or poetry? I went via Print ON Demand and iuniverse.com, with another at 1stbooks (now authorhouse), and got two published. One was based on a friendship in grade school, the other is a good, wholesome high school romance type.

I'm quite gifted in developing characters, as I get so into some fictional universes I try to learn all about each person's traits and notice little things that show why they might be the way they are. Of course, sometimes I get too focused on my work, but htat's another story :-)

If you'd want to order tonline, the titles are under "Doug Fowler," and are "Never Let Me Go" and "This Little LIght."

I also hope to be published some day. I would like to write and illustrate children's books, and am currently studying art.

How did you get your books published?

You just go to the website - either www.iuniverse.com or www.authorhouse.com - and get information. It'll show you how you can even do it online, which I did. I prrofread like crazy, got everything set, and then went throught he process of submitting a front and back cover idea, blurb, and so on.

They'll ask you how much you want to spend on marketing and stuff at authorhouse - whereas it's a smaller package but your book must be 30,000 words or more last I checked at iuniverse. It costs some money, but *way* less than so-called "vanity publishing," and they offer discounts at various times.

If you have something with illustrations, like a childrens' book, you have to go through the mail to send those, I think. If you do a web search on "Print On Demand" and publishing it should help you find others, too, as there's one that does more childrens' books and I can't think of the name offhand.

The way it works is, a book isn't printed until it's ordered - but most book stores will order them if you go to them and say "I'd like to order 'Trials of a Lifetime .220 Hitter' by Joe Shlabotnik or whatever your name and title, and tell them it's a Print On Demand book. They wil have a registry on computer of all the books available. That way, people don't have to order through amazon.com or bn.com or whatever.

(Shlabotnik, BTW, was Charlie Brown's favorite player - and knowing CB, likely a very bad one.)

Wow! I'd love to be a published author. I write both fantasy (in the likes of C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien or Tamora Pierce) and realistic fiction. The main character (and narrarator) for almost all of the realistic fiction stories has Asperger's, but he never really states this explicitly. I'm also working on a series where he and some of his friends travel through time...

Oh, publication... the eternal quixotic dream of so many...

I've just sent out several short stories and the like to a bunch of magazines, which I found in the "Short story and novel writer's market." Now, to pray to Saint Jude. :?

true, but this is the exception rather than the rule.

all the writers/authors i know (and i know loads) tend to keep their day jobs, at least part time, as writing doesn't make them enough money to live on (although their lifestyles are somewhat more sumptuous than my own, i have to admit).

not everyone is j.k. rowling...

Sorry so late to the thread.

I have been published... sort of. My name is just one on a list of authors for the article "Photometric Observations of Protoplanetary Nebulae." :)

I've often thought about attempting to write a book or something of that nature. It actually has been a bit of a dream of mine. Then I observe my writing, which can become quite verbose at times, and think to myself that I am going to accomplish nothing but boring the poor reader to death. I remember in one story I was beginning by introducing a character, and after 3 pages of description for that character I told myself that nobody cares that much about the character, people just want the character to do something. I probably could have been a good author if it was 1895. In the age of Harry Potter, people want to be entertained by a book, they do not want to have to read a book, like they would have to if they picked up a copy of Ulysses.
