There is something about synthesized music that makes me angry. I even own a keyboard and find most of the sounds are irritating. I prefer sampled sound keyboards a lot more. At least they have the same timbre as the original instrument.

In high school, to hear synth music in a mostly acoustic setting, say to add 'strings' to a song, drove me crazy. The only way i can appreciate synth music is to see it in its own context of a new wave setting; songs that are supposed to sound electronic. Otherwise, The music sounds like someone programmed each tone and said 'eh, close enough"
I guess it sounds cheap to me, much like using too much cgi in movies i.e. New Starwars. I can pick that up too. There is unnatural dimension and movement with both cg music and images. It actually angers me to hear it and see it. it feels like i am listening to the 'saccharin' of music.

H'm. Never thought of it that way.

I hate CRAPPY synth, like 80's stuff, or a techno song that sounds exactly the same as every other stereotypical techno song. un tss un tss and all that. But there is some great synthetic music out there.

It depends on the type of sound. Synth horns can sound dreadful... but organ and chromatic percussion can sound pretty good.

Individual string instruments... really bad. But ensemble, it's passable.

Synth is also good at making new sounds that aren't even possible with real instruments... all this approximating stuff... kind of lame.

But you have to make do with whatcha got... I'd really like to buy an expensive sound library for my music. In time I'll get it...

Trying to play guitar over synth drums is like trying to eat soup with one chopstick.

Used to.

Yes synth sounds did sound crap in the 80s. It depends how you use it.

You can use the same crappy sounds in interesting ways now that music has progressed, such as glitch and IDM.

Listen to postal service, they use a lot of old skool sounds but the music is fantastic.

And Au Revoir Simone are one of my favourite bands. They only use keyboards and drum machines but their music sounds wonderfully organic.

80's synth rocked but when Cher, Madonna et al. got into doing that s**t with their voices...that irked me.

You might want to try some early synth from the '60s or '70s. Check out some Wendy Carlos or Perrey & Kingsley, whose big point was not to duplicate sounds (although they could, even then) but to introduce totally new sounds to music.

Also search out some Edd Kalehoff to see how close he came to duplicating sounds on some of the tracks he did for Price Is Right...including the theme.

Quite the contrary, I enjoy synthesized music.

It's cool to see another game show music enthusiast! Edd Kalehoff/Score Productions are the best!

It depends. I quite like analog synth stuff (i.e., Kraftwerk, '80s pop), but digital samples never quite live up to live instruments.

The difference is that analog synthesizers usually don't try to be other instruments; they are synthesizers, with their own unique sound. Digital samplers (sometimes inaccurately called synthesizers) are used as (inferior-sounding) replacements for live instruments.

In fact, analog synths are one of my minor interests, and I've always thought it would be cool to build one myself :D

I like certain types of electronic music. In New Wave and other types of music, I think it gives a nice sound.

When I hear a synthesized score that tries to sound orchestrated, though, I often think about how much better it would have sounded if they'd performed with a real orchestra.
