Hey everyone, I have a few questions......

Does anyone play the drums? Specifically, do you like playing steady/simple rhythm on drums? The drums can be any type of drums (bongos, congas, djembes, etc).

Also, do you think that playing the drums or rhythm helps you in any way, for example does it help you to stay more focused, etc?

I play the drums (all types of drums: drum set, hand percussion, etc) and they have helped me a lot. Music has helped me make friends, focus, and calm me. I like to play simple and complex rhythms.

I love drums and rhythm.

I used to play drums in high school. Didn't get too advanced, I developed some bad habits with technique and never really recovered. And I always tried to play rhythms just a tad beyond what I was capable of. Not smart when you have to be the backbone of the band...

I don't really like simple rhythms though, unless there is a really powerful groove backing it.

I like polyrhythms, and leaving empty space playing when you aren't expecting it but making it sound completely right and natural. I don't like drums solos that fill in all the space.

Syncopation plus playing rhythms in strange time 5 and 7 beat rhythms also fun.

Or playing a straight rhythm then throw in some unexpected triplets... playing around with dynamics.

Best thing about drums is that you really don't need an instrument, any surface and your hands can be used to make music. Often I just tap on my belly or leg, tap my foot... get a groove going... great fun.

I've been thinking about getting one of those finger type midi controllers the hip-hop guys use to make more natural grooves in my music. I'm not into hip-hop or that kind of electronic music, but I do like the grooves they make...

I think rhythm is a stim for me. When I am really into it I could just tap for hours on end... too the annoyance of those around me... :D

I used to be in New Zealand Artillery band (junior) drum corp. The reason I say "junior" is because I was 14 at the time.
Anyway...I used to play the snare drum, march etc.
I like to play simple rhythms on the drum and sometimes more complex ones if I am in the mood. Even though I am not in the drum corp anymore I still play the snare drum.

It doesn't necessarily help me stay focused, but it does give me a sense of self confidence as I know I am good at it :)
