I don't think you can say any one style of rap is any better than another, but I think gangsta has got a bad reputation ebcause of the generic stuff that keeps ending up in the charts. Bring back the days when two of rap's biggest ever talents were releasing amazing albums - namely Notorious BIG and Tupac.

I voted Old School, personal favs are Gangstarr, Main Source, Kool G Rap and DJ Polo and Ultrmagnetic MC's. I really love the sound of the era and the beats.

I like Old School stuff like Public Enemy, Cool J, as well as newer underground Trip Hop stuff like Dalek, and New Kingdom. Beasties, are OK as well as some older Gangsta stuff.

When the lyrics in rap are actually meaningful and not just about smoking marijuana and having sex, then rap's somewhat okay. But other than that, I just don't really care to listen to it. = =

I mostly listen to stuff like Canibus, Eyedea, JMT (just some US examples). I dont think they fit into any of those 3 categories particularly. I suppose theyed be called hip-hop, rather than rap?

some rap is really, really good. most i hear is absolutely terrible though, its a shame because personally i think the genre has a hellalot of potential. prefer more old school stuff or your more unique/abstract underground stuff.

Have hard time putting things into neat categories, so am not sure about what to call it, hip-hop, rap, and what subgenre. Like particular tracks or albums, but not all the stuff by any one group/artist (or kind of music).
Beastie Boys
Jurassic 5
Spearhead/Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy (Michael Franti)
beatbox style, as in old school
MC Serch's "Return of the Product"
Fiend's "Street Life"
Mr. Lif "Earthcrusher"
Jean Grae
The Roots
Public Enemy
MC 900 Foot Jesus
Consolidated

I don't listen to rap a lot, but I think rap can be really nice. It annoys me when people say something like "rap isn't real music" or whatever. ]:

Fasho, rap is real music, people said the same stuff about rock back when it first started, music is just like other forms of art... Its about expressin your self...
