I discovered them a few months ago. I didn’t listen to much non-instrumental music before (except for Radiohead).

Modest Mouse is one of the only bands where I can enjoy the lyrics as well as the music. I like how Isaac Brock has somewhat angry / emotional lyrics but they aren’t all the typical “my women’s done me wrong” or “I hate myself and want to die” stuff. His general theme seems to be about loneliness and feelings of drudgery and lack of purpose in life which I can relate to.

I like the Moon & Antarctica album and the two before that the best. The newer two albums are slightly boring to me musically (They sound too much like Arcade Fire and a lot of other generic sounding “indie rock” bands IMO).

"Doin' the Cockroach" is probably my favorite song. It's so loveably cynical and it rocks. Reminds me of all the annoying people that surround me.

I like them alot. They're a great little band. I saw them live about a year ago right around the release of We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank. It's also great that one of my favorite current bands now counts one of my favorite guitarists (Johnny Marr of the Smiths) among their members. And they have two drummers like the Grateful Dead.

Anyway, I got into Modest Mouse before Good News for People Who Love Bad News when most people got into them. They've always been a really good band and i'm really happy they're successful now.

I found out about them from hearing that “Float On” song on the radio. But I prefer “Lonesome Crowded West” and “Moon and Antarctica” as my favorites. I like those albums the best because they're raw and rocking (my personal preference), not because the die-hard fans have convinced me that “Good News” = “sold out”.

I love Modest Mouse. I have most of the albums and would consider 'The Lonesome Crowded West' to be the best, followed by 'The Moon and Antarctica'. The others are good but not as immediately appealing.

I listen to another band, which I believe was a studio project.
Red Stars Theory.

The drummer Jeremiah Green of Modest Mouse play drums and sing with Red Stars Theory.

Recently got my hands on The Lonesome Crowded West. Very good album. Listening to Trucker's Atlas as I type. Modest Mouse is probably one of my favorite bands.

I saw them live in march.
They were awesome.
However, they were outperformed stage-presence-wise by their opening act, Man Man.
Each member of Man Man plays like 5 different instruments, and they purposely play in a tiny space.
I've never seen anything like it.
It's absolutely insane!

I am a huge and somewhat obsessive Smiths fan. I should dig deeper into the Modest Mouse catalogue, after all Johnny Marr is somewhat considered a permanent member nowadays, isn't he? I need to dig into their back catalogue, somehow it hasn't happened yet but I definitely need to give them a better and more in-depth listen.

I wouldn't check out Modest Mouse from a Smiths angle. Nothing on We Were Dead... is really at all similar to The Queen Is Dead.

The first two albums were very good, especially The Lonesome Crowded West. The Moon and Antarctica is kind of a fun listen, especially when I try to follow the words, but the music isn't as exciting as on the previous releases. After that they got into this tedious "indie pop" thing and lost me completely.

Same for me.

The first two albums are the most distinctively Modest Mouse. I personally like Moon and Antarctica a lot though. It's got some nice meandering space-rock parts that I enjoy even if it isn't as unique.

As for their later albums I have to skip a lot of tracks on “Good News” that I find annoying. I didn't bother to buy that album as I only enjoy a few of the tracks. Most of "Missed the Boat" sounds like generic indie pop to me. I didn’t even recognize that “Dashboard” was a Modest Mouse song when I first heard it on the radio. Thought it was something else.
