That's one of the greatest songs ever written IMO, though it does kind of fall in that grey area between punk and alternative rock, where punk bands were getting more flexible, and "alternative rock" was just starting to take form.
Music has always been really important to me for emotional catharsis, and punk, or at least the really earnest side of punk, has pretty much always been a major focus of that because it is so real, honest, and unprocessed. I've been obsessive with it since I was 11, and I'm 27 now.
Some favorite bands are Jawbreaker, Hüsker Dü, Amebix, The Ex, and Fugazi. A couple newer bands that have caught my attention are Ampere and Touché Amoré. I guess a lot of my favorite punk bands fall under the "post-hardcore" genre because of how emotive and dynamic it is, though I've always been fascinated with the mid 70s New York punk scene.
I've always tried to be really open to all different types of music, but recently the only music I bother paying any attention to is punk, jazz (especially bebop and "third stream" stuff), and some singer/songwriters. I guess it's because those are the three genres that I really identify with, and they're all focused on emotional honesty/integrity, and completely avoid any attempt at appealing to a mass pop audience.
