A while back, I made a point of reading everything by Arthur Machen I could get my hands on... fortunately, my uni library had all of his works.

I think the protagonist of his novel The Hill of Dreams might well fall into the Aspie spectrum... but beware, it is not for the faint of heart.

Anyhoo... for those of us who sometimes wonder (as one does) where all the Hobbits have gone off to these days, here is another Machen story that may well answer the question. But be warned, you may never look at Bag End in quite the same way again

Not familiar with Arthur Machen, but on clicking that link i realised i actually had read that story years ago, when i was perseverating on cryptozoology...

Reminded me a lot of HP Lovecraft. IMO both Tolkien and Lovecraft were probably aspies, and a lot of Lovecraft's characters also are (Charles Dexter Ward is one of the best examples)...

When roughly was Machen writing? His style suggests to me that he was probably writing a few decades before Tolkien, possibly around the same time as Lovecraft... :?:
