“One Second”

I looked into his eyes and saw the coldness as he glanced back over his shoulder. His gaze was neither that of icy hatred nor of watery, fearful doubt, but of grim resignation, like that of a stone the stream washes over—a stone that knows it will one day be worn down to nothing. He had done it before. I clenched the familiar wood and metal in my hands tighter so that I would not tremble. I expected this. I was prepared for this moment. This was what I came here to do.

But looking into his eyes had struck a chord. I could not believe this was happening. After twenty summers, this was to be my winter. I would be one of those that painted France red this day! I took a sharp breath. No! He would! I saw the glint of metal in his hand.

My throat tightened.

My jaw clenched.

I squeezed my finger, and the red paint spilled among the hedgerows.

This is based off a documentary I saw on the History Channel today about Operation Market Garden.

Really like this! I loved the second sentence most of all! Excellent!! !!

Operation Market Garden: Reminds me of the series titled "Band of Brothers". They have an episode based on OP. Market Garden, if memory serves me right. I LOVE that series! I watched many times in the past because I recorded it off of HBO. I should watch it again since it's been a while. My 13 year old Aspie son adores the History channel and anything at all military in nature. That's his obsession. He's playing "Call of Duty" on PS3 as I write this!

My mind is wandering into another topic. Sorry!

LOVE your writing! Keep the stories coming! :D
