Hello, i'm sure there has been many topics about this in the past... but i'm new to the site, so i dunno! :P

anyway, i was wondering whether this book is worth reading, it gets many good reviews, but does it give a true and good representation of AS...

I can get it for like 2.50 or something on play.com, so it might be worth a punt, but is it a good read?

Its AMAZING. Although the charcter portrayed seems a little 'severe', to me, The plot is good and you learn quite a lot. :D

the dream about how he wants "normal people to die" seemed a bit extreme!

I read that book. Is that the one with the autistic child and the mystery of his dog or something. I know the child goes on a little adventure around London or some city.

Well, I listened to it on audiobook, and I enjoyed it. I agree with the previous posters that the main character is more severe than would normally be associated with Asperger's. But it's worth reading/listening to.

Autism and AS isn't specifically mentioned in the book but the kid is obviously supposed to be autistic. I thought it was good, but don't go in expecting much of a deep storyline because even though stuff happens, the substance of the book concerns how the character sees things rather than on what goes on. The way he rambles on about particular topics actually makes it pretty breezy, since it's easy to skim and still get the picture. I went through it in one sitting.

On my copy, it mentioned on the cover that he had Asperger syndrome which is annoying because people will think that you have to have it that severely to have AS.

I love the book though and I've read it a few times :)

I would suggest to borrow it from a library first. Our local has 3 copies! I personally didn't like it very much because there is FAR too much math in it (made my head hurt!). Like others have mentioned, he is quite severe compared to those who I would describe as Asperger rather than autistic. If you haven't already read it, try 'freaks geeks and Asperger syndrome'. It's true story and really interesting because it was written by a kid who himself has AS.

I've known quite profoundly autistic people (as profound as the narrator of the story) who were described as having Asperger's Syndrome. I think it's because the word "autism" raises alarm bells and stereotypes in so many people that their parents felt more comfortable using another term - even if it is a misleading one.

I love the book, one of my favourites.
But I think the character in the book (Christopher) is more autistic than aspergian.
It also has a few other small downsides, but either way the book is very fun to read.

I read in some review, that the character is supposed to be a savant, (maths, natch), maybe that's why he comes across so extreme.
I couldn't finish the book, the character is so "textbook" aspie/autie, so clichè, that really annoyed me after a while.
It's probably, because the author worked with AS kids, he can describe them well, but he doesn't really understand why they are that way.
The worst clichè in the book is the strict avoidance of hyperboles, as if no autistics ever understand anything hyperbolic, sarcastic, or ironic.
I mean just because I don't always get it, when someone's ironic, doesn't mean I'm oblivious to the concept of irony.
