Interesting article.

I've often wondered about the stereotypes of being artist were too. I've always thought of artists as people expressing something from within or creating a craft unique to themselves...not just painting them on a board or canvas.

As a practicing trained artist with some professional background there is much to agree with in the article. To be any kind of competent artist one must be familiar with the tools and the materials of the discipline and learn to handle them with ease and enjoyment. If anything really impressive results it is frequently with much luck and accident but the important thing with art is the enjoyment in working within it. Audiences and money are pretty much irrelevant and another area altogether.
