So two days ago I was revising my portfolio for school, and I just couldn't concentrate, so I went to Wal-Mart and bought an instrumental music ablum to help me concentrate. Yesterday I went to the library with my mom (she had knitting class) and sat in the desk. I turned on my mp3 and put it on the instrumental music. I began revising my portfolio piece, and you know what? My writing came out smooth; I didn't have to think about my sentence structure at all. If was as if I became high and wrote it (No I don't smoke marijuana.) It was better than the first draft. No thinking about composing. No stilted sentences. My writing became not an artery pulsing at some parts, anymore, but a vein flowing through the text.

I wonder now: can music help you with your writing voice at times? I heard that music channels your thoughts and feelings onto paper, so I'm wondering if that's part of your voice. What's your take on this?

I find that music helps me, but only specific types. Igor Stravinsky is most helpful to me, but also Gogol Bordello .

I find that music sometimes helps create entire scenes and even characters. There's a dream sequence in the novel I'm working on now, inspired by one of those 'Ambiance of Nature' albums that's nothing but the nocturnal sounds of small frogs.

For me, listening to many types of music before writing helps me clear my thoughts and figure things out. However, while I'm actually doing the writing itself, I've found that I can only concentrate with instrumental music.
