I don't wear the typical "emo" dress, but I really enjoy bands like Paramore, Panic! At The Disco, InMe, Fall Out Boy etc, all of which might be considered "emo" alongside my usual chaotic musical tastes. The original meaning of emo was "emotional music" with meaningful lyrics, but it seems to have been labled as something to laugh at. Oppinions...

Original emo was a subsect of hardcore, and a great one at that. Weezer, Rival Schools. What is now called emo isn't really emo.

What is now called emo is associated with trend-following scene kids who claim to be straight edge but have no idea where the music they claim to love comes from. THAT'S why people think emos suck.

Exactly. I mean, the original emo genre included bands like Modest Mouse, Weezer and Fugazi that wouldn't be considered emo now. I mean, not even Sunny Day Real Estate, who basically created the genre, aren't really considered emo anymore. Its pop that ruined the genre. There's still wonderful emo bands in the genre, like Blood Brothers and Bright Eyes, but alot of is this Hawthorne Heights/Senses Fail crap. And I blame Chris Carabba.

Also Panic at the Disco aren't emo. That of course doesn't mean they're any good, but they're not emo. The only good thing about Fall Out Boy is that they're drummer is very good. But otherwise they're not very good.

I concur. Current Punk music is in much the same position as the corporate crap that passes for emo, with the added insult that you see kids wearing T-Shirts and listening to bands that broke up before they were even born.

I wouldn't go so far as calling Weezer 'Emo', though, as Emo evolved in the mid/late 80's DC Hardcore scene when people wanted to branch out and do something differant, as well as fairly strong roots in the early/mid 80's Minneapolis Punk/Hardcore scene with the release of Husker Du's excellent Zen Arcade release.

Drawing any correnlation between that with what passes itself off as 'Emo' these days is like drawing a musical correlation between musical correlation between say the industrial band SPK and the Disco Metal that passes itself off as 'Industrial Music', or conversely, like comparing punk bands like Discharge with current punk like Blink-182. --Xenogenesis is essentially the rule.

and just what is wrong with wearing a t-shirt from an old band you like?

its just freaking music.

thats IT.
you can like what ever you want in music, weather its MCR or led zeppilin.

jeez.

so sick of these little "emo/scene complaint" threads all over the place.

you can't possibly complain about one style when the one you claim to be a part of(or not a part of) isn't all roses and sunshine either.

kids are gonna like whatever they want.GET OVER IT.

Paramore/FOB/PATD, or anything on Fueled by Ramen/DecayDance is more Hollister-ish than emo.

But I like Paramore, they're great - even better live.

Probably because the word "emo" sounds stupid.

The word "emo" sounds a bit like Elmo.

I'd say the last truly great emo bands died out more or less at the turn of the century, like Rival Schools and I guess At The Drive-In, too.

The definition of emo keeps changing, so nobody will truly know what it is.

"Emo" has become yet another urban tribe.

I don't take them seriously...
