If you haven't already seen it, here is Susan Boyle's performance of I Dreamed a Dream:

Britain's Got Talent

Boyle was born with learning disabilities, has never had a romantic relationship, and cared for her parents until they died. She was made fun of in school and even by the audience of the show where she was performing. None of that matters and can she ever SING!

Congratulations Susan!

I thought the Paul Potts clip was good, but I think she could be better.

It was very good but it annoys me that people wouldn't have been nearly that impressed if they hadn't judged her to be a worthless, talentless hag by her appearance and demeanor. :x

The articles I saw just said she had "a disability", without specifying. I looked all over because I suspected some kind of learning disability since I saw no evidence of a physical one.

Appearances can be deceiving, she's like a geode.

One of the news reports said that she was oxygen deprived during birth, and has had learning difficulties.

Agreed. In fact, when I saw the clip (before this thread) I could relate a lot to her, and I wondered if she is on the spectrum. The clip made me cry, because I wish I had a talent like that, that could be revealed in such a spectacular way that all outside judgements of me would be cast off almost instantly.

It makes me cry too. She certainly won the jackpot on having a natural talent.

I disagree.
True, she probably didn't fit their vision of what a"talented" singer looked like. But you could argue, neither did 6 year old Connie, shaking-like a-leaf-Andrew, or geeky Paul.

But in the end the audience were impressed because they were all bloody good, and not what you normally get from reality TV.

Well, with the "silly" music in the video when she's introduced to the editing showing the girl rolling her eyes and the disgusted look they sure like to emphasize what a huge surprise it is she can sing. "Everyone was against you" "biggest surprise ever" "don't judge a book by it's cover!" blah blah... I find it a bit insulting and am convinced she wouldn't have 18 million+ hits on youtube if it wasn't for this superficial lame mass hysteria.

Of course, I wish her success (and that she can keep it up despite all the hype on that first performance)...

Interview on youtube
Pffft they're talking to her like she's "special"

I loved her performance -- what a remarkable job she did. She should get a record contract and a job on Broadway/London's West End right now.

It gave me a genuine smile when I watched that. Normally mainstream culture like Britain's Got Talent is quite terrifying, but she really caught me by surprise.

Lovely voice, she cares about her singing deeply. I'm most impressed that she took the opportunity instead of being afraid.

She was on Larry King Live, and he asked her why she picked the song "I Dreamed a Dream." She said that the song exactly expressed how she felt about her life. And guess what? If some Broadway siren had sung the same song, without having had a life of broken dreams, it wouldn't have had nearly the same impact.

Anyone seen this article: http://open.salon.com/blog/steelrigged/2009/04/17/my_sister_is_susan_boyle? I'm curious what people think of this. It actually echoes the reaction I myself had to Susan Boyle (although comparing her with myself rather than with a family member).
