The previous tips are good, here are a couple more for long fine hair- dont put conditioner near the roots, concentrate on mid lengths and ends. Always finish by rinsing really thoroughly, conditioner residue can dull your hair, plus try and use water as cold as you can bear, it flattens the cuticles. Using a hairdryer isn't the worse thing, direct the air flow downwards though , and use the concentrator nozzle and a bristle brush (these retain and distribute the heat), again this should flatten the cuticle and increase shine.

There are some gloss treatments available, many of them to enhance colour but you can get clear ones, again with fine hair try not to use on the roots as will look too flat/greasy. Lastly, use serum, sparingly, on wet hair. Most ranges do them...

Sorry it this is info overload, my hair is usually waistlength and fluffy without the above tips, (it's a bit shorter with layers at the mo, the sun both lightens and dries it out, hence going a bit shorter) and I was a hairdresser in one of my many career diversions...

Thanks! Ill try as much as I can of this stuff tonight. I have tried showering in cold water before, but it was uncomfortable. I guess ill just have to get used to it, just gradually lowering the temperature. For the conditioner, should I leave it in for a few minutes and then rinse it out? As opposed to putting in the conditioner and then immediately rinsing. Ive been told that will help it soak in and reduce dryness.

Yes! put the conditioner on, "pull" it through the mid length and ends and then rinse after a minute or longer if you can leave it. There are intensive conditioners about , they need at least 5 minutes as well.

Have fun swishing your shiny locks!

lol thanks. Im sure things will turn out well.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot! I dyed like 4-5" of the ends of my hair a darker brown one time and it washed out the next day, even though the bottle said it would last 12 days. I suppose the answer to this question is obvious, but I should have used shampoo and conditioner made for dyed hair, right?

By the way, any hair care tips?

Mine's fine, and dry, and down to my waist. I have no idea if women like it. It's long because I hate people touching my head, so I can't stand to get a haircut. When it's very very long it stays in a braid and keeps out of the way without me having to mess with it. I stuff it down the back of my shirt and very few people know it's so long.

I say, don't bother with conditioner. Don't wash it every day. Take the coolest showers you can stand. It's better not to use heat on your hair. Don't comb it while it's wet. Comb out the tangles before you shower, and when you wash it don't pile it all up on your head and scrunch it around. Oil it sometimes, by putting a couple of drops of almond oil on your palms, rubbing them together and and then pressing your hair flat between them and drawing your hands down it. Don't oil the top near your scalp.

The same thing would happen to me when I dyed my hair as a teenager, btw. Permanent dyes would wash out. I told some girl who was really into hair that, and she touched my hair (which I happened to kind of like, because I had a bit of a thing for her) and said it was because "The cuticle is like glass" meaning the surface of the hair. From what little I can see of your pictures and the way you describe your hair, yours might be like that, and will never hold dye unless you bleach it first, making it all brittle so it breaks off and looks like crap.

As of two days ago, my ponytail and companion of the past 16 years and I separated. My hair is shorter now than it has been since I was four years old... perhaps three. This is strange.

Hmm...speaking of braids, I need to figure out how to do it myself. I get to like the third "link" and I already start messing up. I just need practice I guess.

Yeah, it just takes practice, especially for the part where you're reaching behind your own head. I suggest you try a couple of times every day, and if you can't get it right just take it out after trying. I had to, for a while. Even when the braid looked right, for a time I'd get it so the hair on one side of my head was pulled tighter than on the other, an unpleasant feeling.

Ah, yeah. I dont really like my braids to be really tight (but not loose either), so I probably wont run into that very often. Its just the hair keeps falling out of my fingers and messing it up. Mastering this will defenatly make things easier for me, I think. If my hair isnt doing so well one day, ill just braid it and slick back the top. It looks really nice like that when im wearing a black suit and sunglasses. All secret agent-like. lol

If you have longer hair, then they "have something to work with", thats if they like to mess with your hair, or you then have the possibility of getting a moehawk or whatever weird stuff they think looks cool on you.

I have never had long hair until recently, short hair doesn't get in the way, its more functional and all that, just might not always have the best looks.

I've had a few phases through college with long and short hair. I'm not sure which one is supposed to look better. I somehow felt more attractive with long hair, but conventional wisdom appears to suggest I'd be better off having it short. That said, I never noticed any increase in positive attention (from girls or otherwise), just no more random people on the street telling me to get a haircut. Also, I notice more women who claim to like long hair on men than men who claim to like short hair on women.

I have no recent pictures, but here's a picture from a few years ago where my hair was at about the length it is now:

Here's one of my hair at a short length, the day after having it cut:

I'll be having my hair cut at some point, maybe at the beginning of the summer. I'm considering two options: one is to cut it short (as short as in the above "short length" picture), another is to cut it to a length just covering my ears with a view to keep it longish. Any suggestions?

You look cute with the long hair...

...but you look hot with the short one! :P

I have long hair, I like it. I have a fairly reasoned though process for having long hair.

I don't like and often go a long time between hair cuts. I always forget to get hair cuts, and I don't like the 'inbetweens' from having relatively short hair to medium length hair that looks sort of bad to me. Having long hair allows me to go longer between hair cuts and still 'enjoy' my haircut.

I think long hair looks a little better on me. I'm sort of clueless to how others view me, but to me long hair seems to go with my face better.

Long hair taps into my personality a little bit more. I'm an unconventional person, but in very practical ways. I'm not extravagant and showy. But I do things for my own reasons and don't follow trends or norms. I think long hair in the way I keep it expresses that to the world... maybe. I'm probably wrong on this...

I don't have a problem with regular hair care, shampoo and conditioner... and comb it thoroughly in the morning and at other times in the day. I really hate putting products on myself, they are usually too greasy or whatever... I just hate those 'textures'. I also hate the idea of being reliant on a product. Shampoo and conditioner is all I'll ever use. I also don't like to use a hair dryer. Just seems like a waste... and they are annoying to use.

I can honestly say my hair has made no difference in my dating life. Of course with going from zero to zero... it's hard to tell if the change has a negative or positive affect.

I still want long hair, but I'm due for a trim right now. The last time I went they butchered my hair, so I'm not looking forward to trying out another hair cutting place...
