I like hugging my friends but I never want to make it seem awkward. When is it okay to give your friend a hug and how should you approach them?

When in doubt, ask.

Usually, one can tell who wants to be hugged and who doesn't. One of my close friends allows me to, once in a while. I ask him. Another...well, he thinks it's too gay, so we don't. Unless he asks, which is rare.

As for dates, it's my opinion that a parting hug is always allowed, even on the first meeting. Sometimes a hug is expected as a greeting. It depends on the person and the place, really. Culture, too.

Whatever you do, remember to hold out your hand BEFORE anything else. I had trouble with this at first, but I came to enjoy it. I miss it terribly right now, BTW. Need a new female friend.

Sincerely,
Matthew

The guy I'm dating, he and I have known each other for over three years, but saying good-bye is always awkward. Neither of us know what to do. So he just says "See you later, alligator."
