I always related "geek" to "deep interest in technology".
Technology is surely part of it, and I think the definition is open to interpretation.
There can be tech geeks and gamer geeks, but I think too, sci-fi or fantasy geeks, cosplay geeks.
I was a completely different kind of geek than my sweetheart, but we learned new kinds of fun to have together that way. He taught me to appreciate gaming, and I fostered his enthusiasm for Cons. A match made in heaven to be sure.
I admit I'm bothered by the idea that dating geeks seems to be trendy right now. What the heck?
Is it because of The Big Bang Theory? I hope not. That's not fair to "geeks" or people who genuinely have an attraction to that personality type. URG! :/
I'm sure it is because Big Bang Theory and some other series with geek/very intelligent but socially awkward characters like those from Numb3rs, Bones, Criminal Minds, and lately Sherlock Holmes. They are trendy since 2003-2004, same period "zombies" returned. A lot of people are "followers" of what's on tv.
I think all of this is related to a new batch of scriptwriters on their late twenties/early thirties that grew up with zombie movies, science fiction from the eigthies and nineties and comic books and that were socially awkward themselves at school. Now they can capture their childhood's passions thanks to their job, and it's a very influential one.
Moreover, some new series style have supposed a revolution (the "cliffhangers", the complex characters with troubled past, the references to science) and this style is very related to comic books.
It's quite ironic that some people that used to bully comic books and Science Fiction fans at school, are now part of this kind of fandom because "it's trendy".
