Physical Beauty is Temporary

i was not aware that "aging well" meant "looking as young as possible".

I think that's what most people mean when they say that someone has aged well. Otherwise, why bother to add the "well"?
Not that I find Kelly McGillis unattractive in that photo, mind you. It's just that Tom Cruise has aged better (i.e., looks much younger) than her. And no, people shouldn't avoid aging naturally imho. The results of facelifts, botox injections and other cosmetic surgeries are often quite grotesque. Aging well comes down to a healthy lifestyle and good genes.
Genes help but I think that over the span of decades, lifestyle matters even more. Enviromental damage is cumulative and as the years add up, it really becomes the divider between who looks good when they're old and who doesn't. I am including non-genetic disease under the heading of enviromental damage. For the record, I think Kelly McGillis and Tom Cruise both look wonderful in their middle age. Hollywood stars can afford to take the absolute best care of their bodies and health, buying the highest quality food, personal trainers etc. so they tend to look good unless they self-inflict enviromental damage (drugs, botox, etc.).

What happened to peoples value being more than what they look like.
I dont think being hot served marilyn monroe or heath ledger very well.
All the wisest and cleverest people are not classically beautiful yet they are happier with more rich lives.
When I was 20 I might have been less wrinkley and slimmer but I had far less achievements and knowledge than I do now.
crap thread is crap.

I agree with that, beauty isn't an indicator of character or knowledge since looks are based on genetics. A person isn't of higher value or better than another person because they look better and I think it's wrong if society does think this way.
I think society are quick to judge in saying that attraction also equates to having a good or rich life when that is actually far from the truth.

I don't define a person's worth based on their physical attractivity (which is entirely subjective anyway). But I think we all have to accept the fact that we won't remain sexually attractive forever. Otherwise we define our own self-worth based on our appearance, and we can hardly blame society or human instincts for that.
Many people are doing that nowadays. It's not just that society is obsessed with youth; this has always been the case. What has changed is that somehow, people have come to expect to still have a chance to find another partner in their 50s or 60s, or even in their 70s.
Marriages rarely last a lifetime nowadays, and there is no economic pressure to live in a family household anymore. As a result, many people find themselves living alone at an advanced age and hit the dating market again. This desire to remain attractive and sexually active forever is the real obsession with youth, not the perfectly normal drive to find a young and healthy partner.
people can be sexually attractive when they are old lol. not everyone values youth over other aspects.

when cheese or wine have "aged well" it means the opposite. this is curious.
Well, if the cheese is moldy and the wine has turned into vinegar, they haven't aged well either

older cheese is generally considered better though.

To certain individuals with particular preferences but when it comes to acting and being in the media spotlight, people prefer women to look younger or be younger. There are far more young female actresses compared to male actors, most male actors can still be successful or make a break in their 40's and 50's whereas females have their best opportunities in their 20's.

No matter if we like it or not, sexual attraction is tightly linked to the biological imperative of procreation. Therefore, the ability to procreate and the likelihood of having healthy offspring determines what is considered attractive.
Men usually remain procreative for their entire adult life, but the likelihood of fathering healthy children becomes considerably lower at an advanced age. There is a reason that overtly sexually active old geezers are traditionally considered dirty / creepy old men. As for women... well, there is menopause, and that was that.
Of course senior citizens still have sex to express their love for one another (probably aided by mental images of better days, as well as little blue pills), and some even manage to find a new partner within their own age range. But one has to accept the fact that the time when people turn their heads in the street and suitors fall over each other can't last forever.

I think in this case, it is nature's norms and values I would love to live in a world where everyone is considered attractive and people fall in love based on having common interests and compatible personalities. But unless we alter our DNA, that is not going to happen.

you better get out there and hunt some zebra then!
Thankfully, the urge to hunt is not quite as strong as the human sex drive. People can easily satisfy the former by playing World of Warcraft

no.... some people honestly do find older people attractive. you can talk biology but not everyone is controlled by instinct to that degree.

but if men only want women if they are young and hot, women will only want men who are good hunters.

Are you controlled by instinct? Can you change your sexual orientation for example? If you happen to be bisexual, the question is moot of course But if you have a clear gender preference, you are as much instinct-driven as everybody else.
Women naturally have a larger age range since men don't go through menopause. That's why Sean Connery is still considered attractive (that and the fact that he has aged really well).
