What's driving me nuts is seeing post after post on this forum where men complain because women don't appreciate them for their inner qualities. Then, in the next breath, they insist that she's got to be pretty, and say that if she isn't they are "lowering their standards".

Just to set the records straight for myself. I'm not insisting that she's got to be pretty. I have no right to do that, and I'd be a hypocrite if I did, since I'm so repulsive-looking. However, it would be nice if my girlfriend looked good; I think anyone would agree with that. In my case, over 90% of attractive girls are simply out of my league, and wouldn't look at me without thinking "ew, I'm not touching that!" So instead, I'm happy with the girls who show interest in me. Many plain-looking girls have wonderful personalities, and that way, I get to enjoy their company, as well as the benefit of having a girlfriend.

This reminds me of that, save for being infinitely less playful.

Don't be so sure.

it would be cool to have a whole section of the forum for flaming people

I used to post on another forum that had one of those. It was great.

I think I'll start a thread for it. Where do you think it belongs -- Random Discussion, or the Haven?

I could start huge thread on what I think of Alicorn.

I'd be SO there.

It has the potential to be both hilarious and embarrassing all around; good fun, I think.

Precisely. What's all this about "infinitely less playful"? :P

Also, if anyone cares to fill me in on what is meant by "Ayn complex" (Rand?), and how it here specifically applies, please feel free.

Oh, exactly. Maybe you can, but I can't resist when I see stuff like that.

Dude that's awesome! I need to be on that thread.
By the way, I keep meeting people that are like, "Oh cool you studied political philosophy? Have you read Ayn Rand?" and I just roll my eyes. Great writing, but not serious philosophy. She left the real task of thinking through her ideals to other, less talented disciples :?

Wow. That's precisely what I initially thought of Ayn Rand.

I've had a little more philosophy since then though, so now I waver between hating her with a flaming passion and noticing that it's not worth the trouble.

Still don't see what characterisics "Ayn complex" is supposed to be referring to here, though.

Also, don't mean to be a thread hog, but I'd really like to hear what people think about the whole bit on queer theory.

This tends to be the case with the really great philosophers.
(not putting HER in that class). But, take Augustine, as an
example - or Aristotle: they paint in broad strokes, leaving
all the little points to be filled in (and agonized over for centuries)
by more careful followers.

Yeah, I'm not sure what an "Ayn Complex" would be either, you enjoy shopping at Bergdorf Goodman?... As far as Queer theory, my only problem with "problematizing" sexuality is that psychologists don't know yet whether one who "chooses" to be gay, ever actually is choosing... And what is free will anyhow?... For example, some say that sexuality comes on a continuum and straightish guys who choose to be gay were actually bi to beginwith... Or, gay goes that "go straight" maybe had a propensity to do all along... Such a difficult problem to settle...
