I guess its goes to show more or less that AS/autism is really looked at more often from a <30 lens as a developmental struggle when its more pronounced.

That's what I'm finkin. This is a major part of why I reject the "I'm an aspie so I'm doomed to be a social failure" mentality. The early life(teens-twenties) lag on emotional maturity(a major component of one's social success) is significant, but temporary(so long as you don't just give up).

....Look at all those lousy parenthesis... I need to work on avoiding that.

I remember reading somewhere in a book that those affected with Asperger's syndrome have a social/emotional age that is about 2/3rds of their actual age.

If so then part of the problem with those of us who haven't turned 27 is that our social/emotional matches aren't even legal yet, unless they're an aspie, and the gender ratio is not particularly favorable there unless you're a girl. So many have to aim for someone on a different plane until that 27 range.

These are generalizations, just stick to the main idea, the implications of delayed social/emotional age in the context of L & D.

A major over-generalisation which cannot be applied to everyone including those with disabilties. Everyone I know has always said I have been ahead of my time, and the fact the majority of my closest mates and ex gfs are older then me I think supports my argument.

Ahead of your time how?

I'm like a time traveller from the future. I see the world not as it is, but as it could be. I follow some future societal standards and values which haven't even been contemplated by anyone except a few philosphers and thinkers. I should be on Jeopardy or something. I know that much.

That's not what we are discussing. We are discussing emotional maturity and social skills. And in those we seem to lag behind. I know I do. I finally reached about late 20s in those areas.

Because when I was a teenager everyone always said I was very grown up and mature for my age. At the same time I have always been a social person and never lacked social skills.

I have never lacked emotion maturity either so please don't be patronising and condescending by generalising all of of us by using the term 'we'. Some people on here might have those problems but I am not one of them.

I can just tell you this in hopes you remember it someday: Get back to me in 10-12 years and let's see what you have to say then.

You are a toddler, especially so if you've got AS.

Man, I've been 24. I remember what that was like. You've never been 36.

Kids. Each generation makes the same mistakes and learns the hard way, just like the generations before.

Dark side is strong with this one. Are you angry? I'm not being condesending. Just realistic. Take the advice, or don't. Either way someday you'll realize I was right. :P

Because obviously you seem to think by being older you have all the answers. You couldn't be more condescending if you tried (although its not just you I have noticed a couple of other older members on here seem to have this attitude as well). I disagree with you strongly as you seem to think a flawed theory and your own experiences clearly apply to everybody else with the condition. Extremely inaccurate and ignorant to say the least.

And I'm not angry, I just stick to my guns and have become very fed up of how narrow-minded nearly everyone seems to be on here, this is suppose to be a forum where people are not suppose to make assumptions or pass unfair judgements yet nearly everyone on here seems to just want to pigeonhole themselves and each other.

It's always AS this/NT that, how the majority on here seem to think everything is so black and white. Inside the box, outside there box, THERE SHOULDN'T BE A ****ING BOX, seriously trying using your own mind for once instead of being so heavily influenced by what you have been told by others.

This rant isn't aimed at anyone in particular, but the double standards on this forum as a whole, this section in particular which have been bothering me for a while.

Dude thank you. I agree 100%. "Maturity" is relative, but social capability is almost entirely based on experience and effort, AS, NT, or whatever. Of course it takes more "practice" for some than others, but that's how the world works. You sack up and do what you gotta do, or you fall behind.

The two-thirds thing seems to hold some water for me, but at the same time, I feel like an old man.

I look forward to age 27; there are several girls I've liked that were that age but with me being a lot younger, nothing can happen.

It's so flawed though it shouldn't even be considered a theory. It's also saying anyone who doesn't have a neurological condition is instantly mature when they do turn 18, which is very often not the case.

OK, there is no reason to take it personally that a theory doesn't apply to you.

Perhaps if the OP wasn't so patronising I wouldn't have been so irratated in the first place.

The notion that the ratio between your "mental age", whatever that is, and your actual age, remains fixed as you grow older I find quite hard to believe. I don't even think it works as a first approximation, I just think it's wrong. I'd have to be convinced.

Well, that's REALLY odd, because my situation is exactly the opposite. I'm 19 and an Aspie, my girlfriend is 27 and (as far as I know) NT.

I dunno why, maybe its the fact that my girlfriend is actually around my age as far as maturity level, or something like that. I really don't know. All I know is that we have a really great, loving relationship despite the fact that we break the "half your age plus seven" rule by about a year.
