Maybe you should give yourself some practice striking up conversations and talking to people who don't have to talk to you/don't already want to. Maybe read a couple of books on the art of conversation. But nothing beats throwing yourself in and making mistakes though.

Really, you can't know for sure unless they mention it or I suppose others mention it. It's all in the luck of the draw when asking people out even if 2/3 girls are taken.

If they have a MySpace or Facebook, they can list their relationship status as 'single' (or 'in a relationship', etc.)

Of course, there are times when that could turn out as misleading. The last girl I tried to approach had her status on FB as 'single' at the time, and she told me she'd already began seeing another guy. :cry:
