My thought then is that he was using you. Happens to the best of us, especially if we don't know it's happening at the time.
Just be wary in the future of that. Things to watch for -- if you're studying or working on a project with a guy, and you're doing most of the work or way ahead in terms of knowledge vs. him, you might be getting used, and should probably get paid for your time. During this session, real studying or work will be accomplished.
If instead the studying session just turns into an excuse to hang out, talk, and get to know eachother, with little getting accomplished, it's a good sign that he's there more for your company than the stated goal of the session.
