Is this just a way of villainizing men who can't get laid? Or is there truth to these claims?

Seems to only apply to 'islamic' males. Doesn' apply to communist/anarchist "terrorists" and insurgents through history, especially the European ones. Also doesn't apply to secular nationalist arabs and socialist arabs and iranians etc before the fundamentalists took over

That's a good point. I think people have read too much into the "72 virgins in heaven" promise. These guys are not George Sodini with a political spin. It's all religion and politics. There is no evidence that they actually are sexually frustrated.

What about school shootings?

Frustration comes in many forms, sexual, societal, racial, parental, and idealogical.

The rise of internet porn would show an inverse decrease in terrorism

Has nobody explained to these young recruits that the promised 72 virgins are the sexually frustrated young men who blew themselves up first? They're in for a surprise when they get there.

No one should have to be, its just so morally and ethically corrupt. Sex is the biggest thing that a person needs in order to get self growth and progression. When its not there or it is being deliberately denied, then I can fully support whatever the person does next in order to help themselves.

I don't disagree but I think there is a lot of sexual frustration in general out there due to various societal reasons. Think about how advertising constantly plays off our sexual insecurities. Certainly plenty of aspies have sexual frustrations. I think the main cause of terrorism is economic exploitation and imperialism, which is also terrorism and frequently conducted by the US government. Theft of land and destruction of Palestinian homes by Israel, bombing of weddings with drones, support for dictators; these things are all as heinous as something like the 911 attacks and spur on the growth of fundamentalism.

Islamic terrorists are usually driven by the West's support for Israel, rather than the Palestinians.

As for the separatist militias and white supremacist groups here in the U.S., it's their distrust of the government.

I thought Muslims were supposed to wait until they were married. I thought they made the Southern Baptists look like total horndogs.

perusing the internet, it appears that many muslim people have arranged marriages, so sexual frustration is not likely as a cause...

plus, many terrorists are married.

[EDIT: why isn't this thread in PPR? it's not really about L&D]

I'm sure terrorists get horrible sexless marriages after the first 5-7 years like everybody else. :P

And doesn't Osama bin Laden himself have 4 or 5 wives?

Incorrect.

The correct answer is actually wisdom.

hahaha good one! can't agree though..... it's still a BIG part of my marriage after 16 years. there's always something new to try....

anyways i should clarify that i researched and most muslim suicide bombers are not married - it is only a few of them. so i should be corrected.

i always wondered though. do the female suicide bombers get 70 virgins too?

From my perspective it's not so much a lack of sex that creates terrorists, as much as it is a lack of opportunity: economic opportunity. Many suicide bombers blow themselves up because they are promised that their families will be taken care of financially in return.

These people live in some of the richest countries in the world - yet there remains a stark economic division between the rich and the poor in those countries. The rich control massive amounts of wealth, yet don't seem to care about providing either a working economy or any type of social "safety net" for the majority of people who are left to struggle to survive. I don't believe it's so much a matter of "drinking the kool-aid" or being a true believer or a sexually frustrated teen....it's desperate people making desperate choices. (Don't mistake my understanding for sympathy - killing innocent people is clearly not the answer to this problem.)

But life remains cheap in those societies. Women are de-humanized and controlled to the point that they're not allowed to decide what clothes to wear, much less to determine how to spend their lives, whom to marry, what to study, etc. When you objectify half the population in your own society - your sisters, mother, wife, etc. - it's pretty easy to see that mindset extending to the point of considering innocent victims as objects as well. When you believe life is cheap, murder becomes a matter of practicality.

Makes no sense to me. The natural reaction to a lack of sex isn't to fly a plane into a building, is it?

A lack of sex is a problem because it invalidates somebody's feelings. Its that whole feeling that makes people act irrationally.
