I hate to throw a spanner in the works.

But please explain to me the concept of this "dating" business. I'm somewhat confused what it means in a 21st century context.

I don't recall i've ever gone out with someone with the label of the activitity i'm engaged in being described as a "date" so I could do with clarity WTF are you guys are on about half the time.

When I hear that word used in this context I think of some corny americain film depicting the 1950's with a young couple going off to a Drive-in theater to get their mack on so to speak (thats a cockney euphamism for sex incase your wondering)

I have to agree. I have been married twice and never engaged in the activity described above. I'm not sure this even exists anymore, and if anyone is spending a lot of their time trying to make it happen they will likely be disappointed.

Stay home and watch TV, go to a game shop/lounge and play games.

I never dated like that either. I would just hang out with the other person, usually just talking or doing something fun. Even going to get groceries can be fun with the right person.

Yeah, that's how I usually do it. "Dating" is rapidly dying off. I've only engaged in dating, in the strictest sense, I think with three different people (and two of them only once each)--where you don't really know them that well, and go out with them somewhere to hang out and get to know each other a bit. I much prefer the hanging out and having fun method. But rather than get hung up on semantics (for a change), I included "dating" and "non-platonically hanging out" in the same category for the purpose of these questions.

How often do you go on dates? Do you date a lot of people or are you selective?
I rarely ever "date" as in a night out with someone, I usually start dating them and we have a relationship. I don't know if I'd say I'm selective or that I have high standards. If I knew someone really liked me I would be open to going out with them a couple times instead of turning them down right away.

How often do you put yourself in the position to get a date?
I'm around people a lot cause I'm in college, but in positions like going to clubs or somewhere specifically to snag a date? Never.

How often do you go out with friends or to a place where you are likely to meet someone?
I go out with friends fairly often, but it's places like restaurants or shopping...sort of unusual places to be asked out.

Do you spend a lot of time with internet dating and social events for singles?
No, I've never done either.

Do you rely on random encounters, or are you actively pursuing dating as part of your lifestyle?
I've never actively pursued finding someone to date, it's always just something that happens. Usually I meet someone through a friend, once I've been set up.

I mean, how do you initiate relationships if not by dating. Perhaps there is still some "dating" involved, just not in some narrow unambiguous sense.

I see. I don't initiate relationships. I've never had a g/f or even a female friend of any capacity.

Selective, I don't enjoy most people's company and it just wastes my money

How often do you put yourself in the position to get a date?

Dunno, probably rarely, sometimes I over react, like someone, be all weird, then return to normal, out money, and probably done something stupid-courting isn't fun and people are very boring.

How often do you go out with friends or to a place where you are likely to meet someone?

never, I don't really go out with friends they come over to my house (its cold here a lot more then its hot, and when its hot I have air conditioning) and when with friends I don't talk to other people, i am out with friends (plus all my friends are girls)

Do you spend a lot of time with internet dating and social events for singles?
no, those things suck
Do you rely on random encounters, or are you actively pursuing dating as part of your lifestyle?
No and No

I will get a date when the women I approach stop playing mind games. Why should I go out with women who treat me as crap?

I have a strong urge to name and shame the hairdresser who assumed all the wrong things about me. I also have the urge to put up her picture.

In bold in quoted post above, that picture! Of her. Geez!
