I would have thought that comparisons about beauty/health are not a new thing to humans.

I think women tend to be competitive and judge people not just on their physical attrbutes and appearance but also on other things. Lots of women compare themselves to other women with regards their job, how they decorate their home, if they're in a relationship etc.

i compare myself all the time but i think that's insecurity rather than competitiveness- i don't want to be better than them i just want to be equal.

is the first thing we notice about men weight too?

I don't think i have ever even noticed weight except when someone is so morbidly obese it effects their ability to do basic things like get out a car ect. :?

I guess it can be due to insecurity. In my experience now that lots of my friends are getting to the age where they're getting married/ buying a house/ having children it seems to be a catalyst for women to compare their own situation and 'where they're up to' in life with others. In some cases women feel inferior as though their life is not going as 'well' as other peoples' and in others they feel superior that their life is 'better'. I just mentioned this because I don't think that men see things and compare themselves and their situations in the same way just as I *think* that men are less likely to judge each other according to the criteria set out in the original article.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS: WHAT WOMEN NOTICE ABOUT EACH OTHER

How fat the other is
Whether they are wearing too much make up
Each other's dress sense
How they have styled their hair
Their smile
Skin and spots
How tall they are
If they have noticeable hair roots
If they have over done the fake tan
How they have done their eye make up
Their shoes
How big their boobs are
If she has tattoos
How short their skirt is
How straight their teeth are
Jewellery
What man they're with
Whether or not they have white teeth
Whether they have manicured nails

My god, it's like that automated scan process those killer robots at Itchy and Scratchy Land have.

Someone should do a Terminator spoof but with women.

I think it's more like first thing women notice is the body size in general.

Bigger women tend to gang up on smaller women and hate them.

I've been told men size up other men in the same way, although more in terms of fighting ability rather than sexual attractiveness. Observing general height, weight, muscle structure, alertness, aggressive body language etc.

for me, what i notice depends on both context (i.e. on the bus, at work, supermarket), our relationship (i.e.friend, enemy, family)... and... how distant those women are from me. if they are 20 feet away, i can't notice much about them except their silhouette, so of course i will see if they are fat. up close, i might notice their hair or something.

A woman's weight usually has to be pointed out to me unless it's extreme in either direction. What I notice first is the hair and clothes.

I feel insecure about my skin problems so I tend to notice other peoples skin first.

I pay attention to how nerdy/geeky/intelligent/creative they look overall to see if they are someone I can relate to.

I weigh 105 lbs at average height so looking at other people's weight usually gives me a self-esteem boost.

oh this reminded me of what I wanted to say. I think that people usually notice things they are insecure about in themselves in other people first. like if you're insecure about your breasts you notice other womens first, if you don't like your teeth you check out their smile, if you have weird knees you find yourself drawn to their legs etc etc. seeing if they are 'flawed' like you or whether they are the way you desire to be. so maybe it's just more women are insecure about their weight and so that's what registers first about other ladies.

I never really noticed weight in women until a few weeks ago when my friends called me fat. Ever since, that's the first thing I've been noticing.
