That is one thing I love about living in St. Louis... just about everything is free general admission (special exhibits require tickets, but, there can be reduced fee days for those, too)... the Zoo, the Science Museum, Art Museum, History Museum, Museum of Westward Expansion, Audio tours of Forest Park (home of the 1904 World's Fair and larger than NY's Central Park).

That's a lot of culture open to a lot of people, no matter their income. ~smiles~ Love it.

You might well want to be careful with this one if it's too isolated. Would set off alarm bells in many women!

Wait, seriously? Man, I never thought about it that way.

I would probably take her to a planetarium or a natural history museum or something if she's willing, being a geek and all. The "go on a cycling trip/hike" together would actually have been my second plan...

Excellent.

~nodding~ Oh, yeah, the traveling art and history exhibits, the children's museums and all of the theaters charge a bit (although, the Muny in Forest Park always has an allotment of free seats for their outside shows, if you get there early enough).

I have seen a couple of good operas and plays here, but, I am too cheap to drag my hubby along to them when I know he wouldn't enjoy it as much as me.

Sure; would you want to be in an isolated spot with a man you'd only just met and were going out on a date with? Not exactly as though there'd be anyone around anyway.

If I suggested that as a first date I'd be thought a rapist type.

Indeed; a lot of this stuff works if you're lucky enough to live in a large city. If you live in a small town your options are often much more limited.

hahahaha you're such a Negative Nelly on this thread! ther would definitely be fewer options in a small town, but lots of the things still apply. and honestly.... most people in the UK are not that far from a larger centre...

plus seasides and waterways everywhere, old architecture, interesting flora and fauna.... so many things to do. you could fly kites together, go rambling, paint/photograph landscapes, go geocaching, collect shells on the shore, look for fossils or old roman coins, play croquet, etc... the rural areas have their own unique opportunities!

i'm afraid you are determined to see the negatives...

True. We're not. Preston isn't far from me, and if I were going with someone else there would be more to do.

I am Mr Negative. Oh, but I did post some suggestions up the thread if you care to look.

I'd probably suggest a look round a wonderful local village or something if it was a nice day or something of that order. Having said that, getting there would be a problem due to the bus service...

Photography would also definitely be something we could do together. :)

Romantically dining on home made mud cakes in my candlelit dirt patch.

I'll only light the candles for a few seconds, they cost money you know.

Isn't there some sort of alchemical way of turning mud into candles?

Yeah, I always schedule first dates in a pretty public place especially if it's someone I met online. I love nature/hiking but would never suggest that right away unless it was with a group.

I like people-watching as a cheap date too...

I like the way you think, that will save a bob or two.

I think my idea of a cheap date would be too weird even for an AS forum.
