I abhor any kind of formal social ritual. I can't wait to get away and put on some sloppy clothes and curl up with a good book.

I also hate going to weddings. Fortunately, all of my close family is now married so barring a death in the family, I'm done having to go to them.

I have to go to one in December :( until this thread, I hadn't even considered the way I might feel about it while there.

I absolutely love weddings. I sing for weddings and funerals on an occasional basis, although I have attended a significant number of both by now.

I am always single when I go to a wedding, but this doesn't bother me at all. What I love about weddings is that they're ultimately (even if there is high stress leading up to them - I have been a bridesmaid before) a joyous occasion, and I love just being a part of it and soaking in the atmosphere. I love the beautiful setting and decorative clothes people wear, the spectacular cake, the delicious food, the music. I find it hard to understand why some people hate weddings so much.

Love is nice. It's when we mix it with silly rituals and feel the need to prove it to the world that it gets muddy.

That's my opinion, anyway.

i have mixed feelings about weddings. i didn't totally see the point for myself... BUT i think i understand that a traditional wedding is maybe intended to be about more than the bride and the groom***. i believe it's meant to be a way to bring friends and family together to celebrate a happy occasion. in that sense it is no stranger than a birthday party or a graduation. so i did the wedding thing before, and kept it as small as possible (budget was about $500, with a Justice of the Peace in the garden with 20 or so guests).

i didn't like going to weddings most of the time because i was always confused about the procedures/expectations and the socialisation was very heavy. plus, my former husband was often in the wedding party whereas i have never been included, so i would be an odd-bod with strangers while he sat at the head table.

***sometimes the groom wants a wedding more so than the bride... trust me on that one.

I'm not much for celebrations. Like weddings, the rituals all seem hollow to me. I much prefer to observe special occasions/events in my life. Research them, contemplate why they are significant to me... etc.

Celebrations just seem like a pointless waste of my time and energy.

I think I would rather clean a nasty public restroom than go to a wedding.

There is no such thing as true love, anyone who trys to say otherwise is only fooling themselves. I go to weddings out of respect to the people that invite me. If I can I try to go to them.

speak for yourself only. perhaps in your mind you will not find true love, but some of us can and do, and others are galvanised by hope. there are no guarantees in this world, but real love is a reasonable goal.

Me. I feel the same with funerals. Most of the time I'm just sitting there wondering when we can get stuck into the drink. Which is disgracefully selfish, I know.

Until you think you have found it only to realize that there isn't anything special there. Just two people tolerating each other as long as they can.

i was married for 16 years (together for 20), and we still love each other deeply, just not in a romantic way. we certainly do more than tolerate each other! and now i am in love with my boyfriend. true love exists, and it is very special. you are projecting your feelings onto other people's situations.

They must be attracted to you because of your eyes, hyperlexian. They really are quite beautiful (and I'm glad it's not in a Lucio Fulci type way either). ;)
