Having said that siesta happens across all Spain and is just a part of our culture, not related to weather whatsoever(most spanish people still do it if they can when they travel abroad...).

You don't think it's related to the general warm weather of Spain and other Mediterranean and Latin American countries? I don't see it catching on in, say, Manchester or Copenhagen for instance.

Again its part of the culture.
I was brought up being told that I needed to sleep at that time wether I wanted it or not.

I dont do it but most people that do it its because they are used to being forced to do it as a child and now they need to do it to avoid feeling too tired.

I can assure you that if parents at Manchester/Copenhaguen/the north pole forced their children to do siestas it would probably start catching on there.

To be fair to you paella-eaters it does seem to have its uses, especially in the heat that presides over southern Spain (+ Canaries and Ceuta/Melilla) so in that sense it's understandable, and of course for the cultural reasons you outline. :)

Do people who indulge have a few jarras before they go for their kip? Sounds reasonable to me.

I've never seen the appeal, myself. Mind you, I don't like Spain. Portugal is nicer. Nicer people and nicer beer.

whoa, whoa whoa whoa, wait one jodando minute, what's this about Portugese being more nice then Spaniards? Espanya (don't know how to type the tilda) is awesome, you can't judge a people/country by it's beer, and what parts of Spain did you go to that you encountered the more arrogant ones, Andaluz? (this argument might be biased being i'm a Spaniard born and raised in Cali)
