I'm a girl, and I'm guilty of this reaction sometimes. I was out walking one Saturday night, really upset about a lot of things, so I was crying. This guy came up to me and said, "Hey, are you okay?" My mind immediately flashed: "He's thinking, crying girl = easy lay", so I yelled at him and ran away. Part of it was the fact that it was a party night, and I have the opinion (probably not accurate in 100% of cases, but probably right in a lot of cases) that guys who go out on party nights only want girls for sex. Part of it was that I just have a very low opinion of guys, and have trouble imagining them being kind to a girl, particularly a girl like me is who is plain and awkward, unless they wanted to sleep with her. This is partly my own issue in that I have trouble imagining why anyone would be kind to me, but I think this is an attitude shared by many women, and unfortunately it is often a useful attitude to have because there are a lot of guys out there who will convince a girl they care about her when they only want sex. I have known girls who have been deceived like this, and I'm very wary of it happening to me.

You know what, I never even thought about it like that! I have no Idea why either. For some reason I can't view the situation form that perspective. Interesting....

what do you mean by "too nice"? I'm just being a genuine, kind, polite person. You make it seem like there is a problem with that and I should be running around acting like a jerk like most people.

he does mean exactly that. Its a s**t world and being nice will be the thing everyone uses to get power over you. The faster you learn this and then are able to not be randomly nice but rather nice as needed the faster you can get this too nice thing over with and people stop questioning your motives

This gal describes the modern mistrust/revulsion of all "nice guys" quite well.

Quite frankly, don't do anything for a pretty girl you wouldn't do for the other one beside her and the fat guy in the next cubicle (unless you're already in a relationship with her.)

I see. Although I understand what your saying and it makes sense; I'm going to stay true to my nature. I'm not going to change myself because the rest of the world is sh**. I'm just going to figure out a way around it.

Thank you though, I will use this as my plan B, my last resort.

Nice video blue, It explains something svery well. However, this video is talking more about romantic/intimate relationships more so than the causal social/work type relationships. You kinda missed my point, but you still provided useful information. Cool.

I see what your saying MXH and I have encountered this issue before, but that's not what my issue is in this thread.

Your right to some degree though. Some people will try to use you, but once you stand up and let them know that you won't just roll over and take it, they tend to quit that behavior; as you have pretty much said.

Phenom....stay true to your nature.

I will stay true to mine.

My wish is always that one day, someone like you, will meet someone like me, and the two puzzle pieces will fit in.

I'm NT and have to agree with everyone here. I'm probably one of the people who would be put off by you actually! Deltafunction's right, unless I saw you being nice to everyone (in which case I'd just sign you off as a nice person, like I have for most of my guy friends) then I'd get the impression you were into me. I think it's just the age. Most young guys I've encountered are only nice to girls if they're looking to get laid and as a girl you learn to spot this pretty quickly and be wary of it. That's really all there is to it... unless I see you being as nice to everyone else, I'd be suspicious.

But they shouldn't be claiming you're gay because of it. That's just them being bitchy because their feelings got hurt, don't take it personally!

And I don't know if there's much you can do. Maybe talking about friends you have? One of the easiest ways of telling whether someone's into you or if they're just nice is if you drop mentions of your other friends and experiences, especially if they're female. So just something like "my friend Sarah and I did that..." or "my friend Amanda says the same thing...". It might sound a bit cheesy, and don't make it like you're bragging about your friend count or anything, but introducing the fact that you have female friends will make other girls see you as a friend figure more easily :)

I'm not sure, but doesn't this occur even more often to girls?

It has happened to me twice in the past two years that I really thought a girl was flirting with me. But in both cases, I later learned that she had a boyfriend, so it's unlikely that I she was actually flirting. Maybe they were just extraordinarily nice to me (not so many people are nice to me)..

this used to happen to a guy i worked with at my last job. for example, when taking coffee orders from fellow staff members, he walked up to one woman and asked what she wanted:

HIM: "what can i get you from next door? i am doing a coffee run."
HER: "oh, nothing for me."
HIM: "it's no trouble, look i am going right away, what can i get you?"
HER: "i am not comfortable when you buy stuff for me."
HIM: "no no no i am buying coffee for allllllll the peoples on staffffff, not just youuuuuu!! !! !" :/

he was good looking according to the women on staff and he appeared single (very long-distance relationship, never mentioned girlfriend). it was usually the younger women who assumed his intentions, because the older women didn't care (i.e. they'd not jump to any conclusions because they knew how to handle these situations with a bit more finesse from experience, or perhaps they'd be more flattered than outright worried).

he got to the point where he swore off having any female friends at all! so, uhhhhhh i don't actually know what to advise. maybe mention your girlfriend a lot in conversation?

This is an example of a situation that is just begging to be misunderstood. (Keep in mind that I'm pretty old) A "nice" girl doesn't accept gifts of any kind from a guy she's not interested in because that could lead to misunderstandings about her feelings for him. Even coffee. Basically, don't encourage men you're not interested in by accepting their "advances" (and really, who knows what an "advance" might be, so basically accept nothing from a man you're not interested in).
Also, don't take advantage of people. So unless I was giving him money for the coffee, I wouldn't have accepted his offer
either.

As a side note: I have a co-worker who is like catnip to the middle aged ladies among us. He totally loves the attention but holds them (us) at bay by randomly mentioning his wife. If I were his wife I would be annoyed by his walking right to the edge of vague impropriety like that. She's a better woman than I.

^^^ While it could've been handled a little more politely, I actually respect the idea that someone would purposely choose NOT to accept gifts from someone trying to gain their affection. She might've been vain to assume any friendly man is doing exactly that, but I find it rare that someone would actually have enough courtesy for others to not take a hopeful man's offerings!

[sigh] All too many would gladly take those offerings with a little flirt (with zero intention of following that up) encouraging the hopeful sap to continue bringing free goodies and services.
(note: not all - I shouldn't have to make this disclaimer every dang time!)

So my advice to you stays still, don't be p****, not even with a woman since she already has her own loool.
