Ah yes. The similarities between how jobs and girlfriends work: If you don't have one, noone else wants you either.
I would guess the reason why would be because the transition from one to the other would not be as smooth?

^^^ as per the title, i was just doing some thinking about what makes people appear attractive. something that curiously seems to make people seem more attractive is... seeming unavailable.

we all know that people cheat (badbadno!) and for a long time it was assumed that only men intentionally "poached" on other men's territory. but now it is also known that a large segment of women prefer men who are in relationships. especially.... a large segment of single women. some of them say "all the good men are taken" because they WANT a man who is already attached. here's a study about that:

Quote:
To the men in the experiment, and to the women who were already in relationships, it didn’t make a significant difference whether their match was single or attached. But single women showed a distinct preference for mate poaching. When the man was described as unattached, 59 percent of the single women were interested in pursuing him. When that same man was described as being in a committed relationship, 90 percent were interested.

http://tierneylab.blogs.nytimes.com/200 ... ached-men/

so, anyway... putting aside the fact that men and women really suck sometimes... has anyone ever considered pretending they are in a (i.e. casual/long-distance/vague) relationship just to make themselves appear more attractive? i think that if the relationship was rocky and just happened to end at an appropriate time as someone new was showing interest.... ummmm could that work?

i value honesty. but i can see how this could work. a person who has had successful relationships carries a bit of a resume/cv... they have references, so to speak. and if a new person even felt like they were poaching from some old flame... it seems like a plan that has merit (though maybe it is a bit unethical). is this crazy?

Plenty of women have fake wedding bands to not get hit on. Read other articles too claiming it worked the opposite way with (real) rings for men, i.e a certificate like you put it. But that depends on what kind of people you'd want to attract, I guess. I don't know if it's true either. I think it depends on how big the lie would be - would be pretty weird to make someone out to be an imaginary home-wrecker.
A good idea is to maybe keep the single status off Facebook, as anyone interested would already know or have to ask :) Maybe not on sites that are made for dating, as there are plenty of people looking for a "third" (and plenty of people that don't want to be a "third") and that would get you other responses than the one I assume you're looking for. I mean that as a general you. :)

No, if she was into that she would not be asking if it's true. She would be lecturing us on how it absolutely is true, because of evo-psych, while insulting us.

good point about keeping the lie small, though. and i agree - it may not work on everyone as expected, and it may not work on men really (except maybe for flings? not sure).

PUAs like David Deangelo would caution against such girls because they have no sense of humor. :P:P:P

I'm not sure I could get into a relationship with someone who pursued me while I was (allegedly) in a relationship. I think the strategy might work, but would I want it to? Probably not.

Interesting idea, though.

If thinking PUAs are funny is lacking a sense of humor then I'm very sorry he won't try to manipulate me into hopping on his dick :( :( :(

Haha yes, it has made the word alpha completely meaningless.
I agree with what YellowTamarin said. But for flings I guess it doesn't matter as much what kind of moral they have concerning relationships? Or use a smaller lie than like a ~marriage~, whatever that would be.

On dating-sites: "Pretend to already have a girlfriend , so you can get a girlfriend". Gee no wonder it's called OK-stupid.

It isn't wise to get involved with a woman who doesn't value fidelity unless you are looking for a mistress (although if you got serious with her, she'd probably expect you to stay faithful). Don't use this trick to get female attention on dating sites if you want a long-term monogamous relationship.

Women are famous for using men to boost their status. That's all this is (not that having a girlfriend signifies anything important about you - it's not that hard to acquire one). Another trick is to give the impression of popularity in your photos. Take a photo of yourself surrounded by people in a bar smiling and acknowledging you. You don't even have to know these people. You can ask some guys playing pool to pose with you in a picture (pay them each $10 if you have to).

Women are obsessed with this crap, while men just want pretty girls, but we're the ones who get called "shallow"!

As far as I can tell a third of the posters in this thread right now are women. A woman started it, and was not talking about being on the receiving end of that trick. Why do you think strategies are just for men only? Why do you think you can speak for all men, or know what all women like? If you think women never want to be in a relationship for love in the first place, why would you try to pursue them? I really hope you're gay or asexual.
