I guess I miss enough cues that I usually end up in a slightly awkward moment. I don't use the word "aspergers" unless I think we're serious. I usually just use a line my therapist gave me: "I was raised by wolves and sometimes miss social cues. I'm working on it but might need you to be direct if I miss the subtle cues."
It usually gets a laugh and has saved me from a few embarrassing situations where I had no idea what was going on anymore.

I'm super bad at doing this. I usually wait a bit to tell people, whether it's just a friend or someone I'm actually interested in, just until it comes up in conversation... it's weird, autism just happens to come in conversation on a way more regular basis that I you'd think. Most people I tell laugh because they think I'm joking and then it gets all awkward when they realize I'm not haha

I met up with a girl last fall that I hadn't seen in quite a few years, and we were having a few beers at a music festival. We were "catching up" on each other's lives, and she happened to mention her brother's difficulties with aspergers. I mentioned I had aspergers too, and she just got up and walked away. I thought things were going great before that moment.
