Urgh.

You need to think before you do things like this.
You can't blame him for not getting the message when you put out a seriously strong wrong message to begin with.

Ignoring him is a lot crueller than saying to him "You're a nice guy but...."

If he says anything about the date, just say you didn't realise it was a date.

Not telling him directly is just going to make you unattractive to people like me.
