I'd also agree with this, I've learned to be more discreet with experience.

Also, I think for most people a crush is more of a fling and nothing serious, so you don't really know unless you ask them directly. While for others its more deep, and obvious.

It sounds like he might like her but be shy about expressing it. I think cat books are a great flirting gambit, being a fan of both cats and books myself.
