I don't like it much (I prefer beans way more), we make stew of it, another less common dish is the "okra in oil".

The beans stew is very similar to it.

and Okra in oil:

Boo: Over here they call that a chip butty. Another (Nigella) variation of it is to stuff the chips into a thin wrap and slather with houmous. I haven't heard of anyone who has tried her version though.

Looked this up, it's pretty close but not the same stuffing, there's no cabbage and mayo in the chip butty.

Yeh, I've never seen the point of a chip butty because it's so basic. The bread just lessens the flavour of the chips. I think mayonnaise is the best condiment for chips.

Thank you Boo,I want to try those out.Okra grows real good here, mostly we eat it fried,in gumbos or pickled. You may like it fried, slice it in about1/2 inch rounds, soak in buttermilk, roll in cornmeal and deep fry,it's better fried in bacon grease but maybe you don't eat that.
The seed catalog I get has some squash from Lebanon,I may try them out,it gets hot and dry here in the summer.I've planted some Leabanese Cedars several years ago and they are doing great. The drought we had never slowed them down,it got down to zero last winter and they were ok.

While on the subject of food...get a big handful of rocket lettuce, squeeze a little lemon juice over it, drizzle some olive oil on it, then roll it all up in parma ham. One of my favourite snacks.

Boo: My nan used to make this dish which included frying dry noodles and rice and then adding water and peas, and I think a stockcube to it. I can't remember what the rest of the ingredients were. Do you recognise this recipe? What is it called?

I think you mean the pea and carrots stew, we don't really fry the rice, just the noodles.
Make sure it's the chaayriya noodle, not the same of the asian stuff, it's cracked into small pieces and fried before being added to rice and water, water qty depends on the rice type.
We usually use Italian or egyptian rice for stews, basmati for indian/khaliji stuff like Beryani and Kabse.

I made an awesome grilled cheese sandwich earlier on today, the key is to use low temperatures and be patient. As well, use a decent nonstick frying pan, and apply butter liberally to the outside of your bread, as well as a bit in the pan itself.

;-) Surely that's a fried cheese sandwich !?

I've always thought the term "grilled cheese" was a bit of a misnomer. You're not sticking it on a grill, you're frying it in a pan! That's how they're made. :P

I think I've asked my mother to fetch me a beer before. :P I know, that sounds kind of bad, but she likes to treat me well when I come to visit.

Coming right up served with a nice cold beer to go with it!

do you know how to make grilled cheese with super thick bread and cheese.
when i worked at the university i would get one for $5 every so often super good. I tend to burn grilled cheese sandwhichs :(

You're cooking it to fast. Use low heat so the outsides doesn't cook before the inside.

I usually cook it on medium high on the stove.

I use a small grill with a cover on the stove, it helps distributing the heat to all sides of the sandwich.

Nope, something like this, an indoor grill, some are electrical, others used on stove. For electrical is best to have double heating surfaces (the bottom one and the top one) to press the sandwiche and heat it both sides.
