Anyway she said she wanted kids "five years from now", which still scared the crap out of me.

At the moment I feel like I'll be ready five years after I'm dead. Maybe five years from now I won't think the way I do now. Hell, five years ago some of my thought processes were polar opposite compared with now. I guess I can't imagine how a more mature version of myself would think because if I could I'd already be that mature.

This is one of the things I just don't understand, when and why did the Middle-east turn to s**t?
These people invented agriculture and astronomy and writing and currency, when my illiterate ancestors were living in one-room wooden homes with their dogs and chickens and goats, and even sacrificing other humans. Baghdad and Alexandria have been centers of learning from ancient times up to the Islamic Golden Age, and somehow it all turned to s**t.

Five years from now, should you progress, you will think much differently than you do now.

It's not too late for me to have kids. I'm a relatively healthy person, and can keep up with a kid should I have one.

Maybe when I'm in my 60s.

Nope, it's too late.

Recent evidences show that men also have a biological clock (and risk of genetic defect increases significantly with age) - it's a pretty bad idea for a man to have children after 50

Also it's kinda selfish and not much practical, to raise a child with that huge age gap, would you be able to do physical activities with him/her when he's 15 for example? Also you have to find a much younger wife to begin with.

I'm wondering: Do most people believe the world is "too cruel a place" to have and raise children? I happen the think some facets of the world suck--but not enough to preclude one from creating new life, and taking pleasure from the raising of children.

I believe the world is too cruel and for this reason I have not had children.

I feel a visceral disgust when I see parents because of their selfishness and arrogance.

Humans need to be culled.

Kraftie, to add a poll there's a little tiny plus sign above the submit button on a new topic submission page.

It's not weird, many civilizations had declined to bottom rock in human history.

Kids are amazing, actually.

Even in the "worst" areas of the world, kids always are so resourceful in making themselves happy. They are so resilient. They don't have all those adult philosophical hang-ups.

They are pretty amazing. Don't underestimate them; their unique perspective can teach you a lot about yourself and life.

I know a 55 year old woman who had twins. They haven't suffered as a result. They're very happy kids.

Then...there's always the option of adoption...

For most with autism the world is too cruel to even have the chance to get children. If you are lucky enough to meet someone that accepts you then better hope your children turn out normal or they'll go through hell.

What stats? I didn't talk about any stats.

I have also explained, not just biologically-wise, why it's selfish to do so.

I agree with you, but it's rude to say directly to someone that they shouldn't procreate. There is a difference between the discussion of an abstraction and telling someone they can't have kids.
Maybe you don't care, but nonetheless, if someone wants to have kids in their sixties, it's their business.

It certainly a less "cruel" place than it used to be, by and large. We live in the safest time in history. So I guess my answer would be no.

You'd be surprised how many gray-haired people have multiple kids here in NYC...and are quite successful in "keeping up with them."

I'm not anticipating having kids at the present moment--but, there are times when I feel like I should have had kids in the past.

It's really one's business alone to have kids? Or shouldn't be regulated somehow, in some cases to limit sufferring? That's a long debate for another time.

For example why some advanced countries prohibits cousin marriage? Because of stats...

I think it should be regulated. Obviously I can only speak from my experience in Canada, but if the government were to put restrictions on who can have children, I would support it. Such things as education achieved and economic success. There would be less children, which is a good thing. Of course there would also be a segment of the population with illegal children. But these could be taken from their parents and either be adopted or go into state care.
